RADFORD – School Board member Karen Gerlach is seeking re-election.
Gerlach, who has been a member of the school board for the past eight years and has served as board chair during her tenure, has announced she will seek a third term on the board. The school board election is set for this May.
“The main reason I have decided to run again is because I feel we are on a roll,” Gerlach said of her decision. “I look back at all that we accomplished in eight years – a new school, all-day kindergarten, participation in the Governor’s School, free passes for students in sporting/music/drama events, full-time nurses at all four schools, the Pre-school program, and the list just goes on.”
“And with the exception of the new school, we were able to do this with no additional funding from the city, not to mention the fact that we have maintained our tradition of excellence in academics, athletics and the arts,” she added.
Gerlach said she is pleased with the accomplishments the school board has made, but thinks there is more work to be done.
“I’m proud to have been a part of that, but I feel that we need to continue to move forward and keep that momentum going,” she said. “We need to make improvements to McHarg, we need to find ways to continue to fund the salary scales, and we need to continue to add and improve programs and services. No matter how good we are, there is always room for improvement and I just look forward to contributing whatever I can to make that happen.”
