Dr. William Garfield Weldon, 82, of Christiansburg, passed away Friday, March 3, 2017 at the VA Hospital in Salem.
He was a 20 year U.S. Navy Veteran and a Purple Heart recipient. He retired from Montgomery County Schools and was a United Methodist Minister for many years. Dr. Weldon received his undergraduate degree from Emory and Henry College, his Master’s and Doctorate in Theology from Emmaus Bible Institute and Seminary and did his ministerial studies at Duke University. He was a member of New Mount Olive United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Ethel Davis Weldon; daughter, Gretchen Deneen Neal; and three sisters, Diane Weldon, Othelia Thomas and Gloria Weldon.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Greta Hale Weldon of Christiansburg; sons and daughter-in-law, David Wayne and Vanessa Neal of Woodbridge, Derick Chris Neal of Christiansburg, and Tyrone and Tony Weldon, both of Washington D.C.; daughters and son-in-law, Carolyn Neal-Price and W. E. Price of Reston, Lolita Hanes Dawson of Christiansburg, Edwina Weldon and Casandra Weldon; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister, Delores McClinton and brother, Wayne McClinton; and many other relatives and friends.
The family received friends from 9:30 a.m. – 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford. Memorial services began at 11 a.m. with Rev. Barbara Doyle and Rev. Henry Lindsey officiating. Interment with full military honors followed at the Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Dublin.
