Sons of Confederate Veterans meeting Tuesday
The Sons of Confederate Veterans, Stuart Horse Artillery Camp 1784 will meet on March 14 at 7 p.m. at Ray’s Restaurant on Rt. 221, north of Floyd.
Members of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) are also invited to attend. If Floyd County Public Schools are closed on Tuesday or Wednesday of that week due to weather, the meeting will be cancelled.

Blacksburg United Methodist Church hosts free film screening Thursday
The monthly Faith & Film series continues on March 16 from 6:30-8 p.m. in the Central Conference Room, 111 Church Street in Blacksburg.
The film will be “Up on the Ridge,” which gives viewers an in-depth look at the United States prison industry and the social impact of moving hundreds of thousands of inner-city minority offenders to distant rural outposts, revealing injustices in the American prison system. Screenings are free and open to all. Refreshments will be served.

Christiansburg Aquatic Center hosts Relay for Life event Friday
The Christiansburg Aquatic Center, in partnership with Relay for Life, will be hosting a water walking and swimming event on March 17, to raise awareness for cancer research and programs.
Two lanes in the leisure pool will be reserved from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. There will be no charge to swim or water walk during this time, and donations to Relay for Life will be accepted.
Hike for Hospice registration open until April 19
Online Pre-registration is open until April, 19 for the second annual Hike for Hospice. Only those who pre-register in advance are guaranteed an exclusive second annual NRV Hike for Hospice T-shirt.
The event will include hiking, games and live music. Lunch will provided by Heathwood Market Catering. Participants will have the option of choosing between three hike routes: easy/ADA accessible, moderate and advanced. Hikes will be led by Claytor Lake State Park rangers.
Adult pre-registration is $25, student pre-registration is $20, and a team (four or more) is $20. Fees will increase by $5 for day-of registration.

Christiansburg offers rehabilitation code training March 23
Learn more about how you can help revitalize downtown Christiansburg by registering for this training class on the Rehabilitation Code for the commonwealth of Virginia.
The March 23 class runs from 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. at Mockingbird Cafe and Bakery (upstairs meeting room). Lunch at the cafe is included, as well as a tour of the historic Barnes-Surface Motor Company building.
The class instructor will be Kenney Payne, with opening remarks from Town Manager Steve Biggs and Mayor Mike Barber.

Help Save The Next Girl hosts safety summit March 18
Help Save The Next Girl and local law enforcement are hosting a safety summit at Christiansburg High School from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. March 18. Registration begins at 9 a.m. The summit is for all Montgomery County Middle and High School students.
Presenters will discuss topics such as substance abuse, dating violence, personal safety/awareness, and on-line safety/use of apps. There will also be information available from the Women’s Resource Center, New River Community Action, as well as other local agencies.
This event is free to participants and all students will receive a free t-shirt and free lunch.
A presentation for parents covering on-line safety/use of apps will take place from 1-2 p.m. Due to the topics discussed, no children are permitted to attend the parent presentation.
There will also be a Health and Human Services Fair for adults from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. if parents are interested in attending while students are participating in the Safety Summit. Please note that lunch will only be provided to students.

Veteran’s Appreciation Breakfast April 1
An appreciation breakfast for veterans will be held from 8-11 a.m. April 1 at the VFW Post 5311, 490 High Street in Christiansburg.
A free breakfast for our veterans is our way of honoring their service to our country and our community. Veteran’s service representative will be available to answer questions. Sponsored by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5311, American Legion Post 59 and Marine Corps League Det. 1190.
