When the Virginia Tech Men’s basketball team took on Wake Forest, a group of special fans in section seven could be heard cheering extra loud. United Way’s 14th annual Kid’s Day took place this year on March 4 at Cassell Coliseum, thanks to Virginia Tech Athletics and founding event sponsor, Bill Roth.
In addition to free admission to the game, every child and chaperone attending the event received vouchers for a hot dog, popcorn, a soda and a milkshake. They also received a special T-shirt, sunglasses and a wristband to commemorate the day, as well as a post-game picture with the Hokie Bird.
“We are grateful for Virginia Tech Athletics and Bill Roth for their work to make this event possible again, for the 14th consecutive year,” said United Way Programs Coordinator Marcela Jara.
“This special event has grown to be such an inspirational and memorable moment for many children who have never set foot on Virginia Tech’s campus. It is truly a wonderful community collaboration, and is always a delight to see the kids really enjoying themselves throughout the game,” Jara said.
