Christiansburg High School is now looking to fill three of its varsity coaching positions. Shawn Good, who led the boys’ basketball team to a state championship in 2012, is headed to Roanoke Catholic to take over the same position there.
He spent the past eight years at the helm of the Blue Demons.
The openings at Christiansburg have been like a revolving door in the past month as the school is also looking for a varsity wrestling and girls’ basketball coach. The wrestling job is the most attractive as the program has won 16 straight state titles, and a new coach could be named by early next week. That appointment is awaiting approval by the school board.
Good calls the situation at Roanoke Catholic a great opportunity for him that will allow him to be closer to his other job at the Spectrum Sports Academy.
Good played on the 1995 basketball team at Virginia Tech that won the National Invitational Tournament. He got his coaching career started at Auburn High School, shortly after graduation and stayed there for five seasons, then moving to Christiansburg leading the school to a state title in 2012.
He also currently serves as the director of basketball at the Spectrum Sports Academy training facility in Roanoke, and had been putting a lot of miles on his vehicle driving back and forth for the past year.
Good replaces Josh Cunningham who after three seasons at Catholic took a similar job at William Byrd. Catholic finished 17-11 this past season. Christiansburg was 6-17 .
Christiansburg has another opening on the boys’ bench as assistant coach Ryan Sullivan is following Good to Catholic.
No word as of yet on when the school system will start advertising the new opening.
The county is also looking to fill a girls’ varsity coaching job at Eastern Montgomery and a newly created girls’ soccer coaching position also at Eastern Montgomery. Blacksburg High School is also looking for a new cheerleading coach.
