Post 59 tryouts
Legion baseball is just around the corner, and Legion 59 will hold tryouts on June 3 and June 6 at the old Blacksburg High School field. Junior team tryouts will be 12-1:30 p.m. on June 3 and Seniors from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. On June 6, Juniors will hold a second tryout from 6-7 p.m. and Seniors from 7-8 p.m.
Hokies to play Kentucky in ‘17
Virginia Tech men’s basketball head coach Buzz Williams announced on Wednesday that the Hokies will face the University of Kentucky in Rupp Arena on Dec. 16, 2017.
The Hokies finished the 2016-17 season 22-11 overall and 10-8 in ACC action and earned its first NCAA Tournament berth since 2007. The Hokies received its first national ranking during this past regular season for the first time since 2010 and recorded back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time since 2011.
Kentucky finished the 2016-17 season 32-6 overall and was 16-2 in SEC play, winning the SEC Tournament championship.
Despite the close proximity of the schools and states, this will be just the fifth all-time meeting between Virginia Tech and Kentucky. The Wildcats lead the all-time series, 3-1, and won the last meeting, 84-60, in the second round of the 1996 NCAA Tournament in Dallas, Texas. Tech is 1-1 in Lexington against the Wildcats, having won the most recent meeting, 80-77, in 1962 in Memorial Coliseum.
Shooting Straight archery clinic
The Christiansburg Department of Parks and Recreation has announced a Shooting Straight Archery Clinic June 7-13 at Triangle Archery Club from 10 a.m. -noon. The price is $30 per individual with registration ending June 2.

Basketball camp at RU
Radford University men’s basketball coach Mike Jones is hosting a basketball camp June 19-22 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The price is $175 per player, and group and faculty discounts are available.

Stand up paddle boarding
Learn to stand up paddle board during a class sponsored by the Christiansburg Department of Parks Recreation on Tuesday, June 20 at Claytor Lake.
The class will be taught by Mountain 2 Paddle Board Company and consists of both dray land and on water instruction. Participants will need to pay an additional fee of $4 for park admission.
This class is the perfect way to get started paddling the right way and experience the fastest growing water sport.

Downtown 5K
Run the streets and trails of Blacksburg at sunset during the Downtown Sundown 5K on June 17. The event starts and finishes on Draper Road in the heart of the Summer Solstice street festival featuring crafts, live music, food, drink and more.
Race day registration will take place on the lawn of the Alexander Black House from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.
All runners will be required to wear reflective clothing and carry a glow stick (free to the first 300 runners) or LED light.
Regular entry is $30, late entry $22 and $25 day of the event. Awards will be given to the top overall male and female along with top three in 10 age classes and the top masters and grand masters.

CHS football camp
Christiansburg High School, in cooperation with the Christiansburg Recreation Department, will host a football camp June 26-28 for ages 7-13. The price is $75 and will run 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Registration ends June 23, and camp will include: camp T-shirt, snack, lunch, water and Powerade, and a daily guest speaker.
