NRCC offering handgun safety class this month, June 15
New River Community College will offer a handgun safety class on Tuesday, June 13, and Thursday, June 15.
Both class meetings will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. at 206 Edwards Hall in Dublin. Range time will be offered on the Saturday following the class.
The cost of the course is $60.
The six-hour classroom portion of the course, instructed by Joey Williams, is required. However, range time is optional. The class is intended for individuals who are applying for a handgun permit through the courts, and will cover topics such as the nomenclature of revolvers and/or semi-automatic handguns and safety issues related to handgun ownership. Participants will also learn how to care for, maintain and store their handguns.

10th Annual Summer Solstice Festival, June 17
Downtown Blacksburg Inc. is hosting the 10th annual summer solstice festival on June 17, from 1-11 p.m. in Downtown Blacksburg. The event will host the Solstice Fest Craft Market with over 20 local vendors as well as Community Connections, a local non-profit group that provides fun, family activities. Other activities include Alberti’s Flea Circus, Water Wars, moon bounces, doggie costume contest, Circus Stella, live music, a beer and wine garden, festival foods, yoga on the lawn, and sand beach.
Dialogue on race, August 26
The Dialogue on race summer summit with sides will be Aug. 26 at 5 p.m. located at the Summer Picnic Summit at Nellie’s Cave Park. Catch up with friends and colleagues on combating racism in our community. You are invited to bring a friend and a side dish. Fried chicken will be provided.

The office is located at the USDA/Christiansburg Service Center, 75 Hampton BLVD, Christiansburg, Virginia. The office hours are 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. To better serve you we ask that you arrive at the office no later than 4:00 PM. The Service Center is closed on Federal Holidays and in some cases the office will open late or close early due to inclement weather conditions. For those reasons also, we encourage you to call before you visit.
NAACP events: June 17, June 25
Please join us for our annual Juneteenth Celebration: Saturday June 17 at Rosa L. Peters Playground, 300 Depot Street NE in Christiansburg at 11 a.m. There will be entertainment, games, and food for sale. Proceeds will benefit the Youth Council. All are welcome.
The June General Body meeting of the Montgomery County-Radford City-Floyd County NAACP will be held on Sunday, June 25th, at Asbury United Methodist Church, 500 Stuart St in Christiansburg. The meeting will begin at 3:30 p.m. All are welcome. (Please note there will be no General Body meeting in July).
Blacksburg July 4 Parade Registration
The 31st annual July 4th parade in Blacksburg will set off at 2 p.m. from the Old Blacksburg Middle School, travel along Main Street, and end near the Alumni Mall. This year’s theme is “Let Freedom Ring.”
Parade entries are needed, and can be floats, marchers, antique vehicles, wagons, bicycles, sports teams, businesses, horses, bands, race cars, scouts, etc.
The Mount Tabor Ruritan Club sponsors the parade, and also the movie “Annie,” which will be shown after the parade in The Lyric Theatre on College Avenue. It will be the ‘classic’ version, with sing-a-long subtitles.
The Town of Blacksburg will have music, food, and entertainments near the Recreation Center on Patrick Henry Drive, beginning at 6 p.m., followed by fireworks at 9:30 p.m. Call Parks & Rec at 540-443-1100 for information on the evening events.

MCPS summer school, June 19
MCPS Summer School will be held from June 19-July 13, 2017, at Christiansburg High School. Registration for repeat courses is now open. New course registration begins May 1.

Astronaut Leland Melvin will be at the Christiansburg Barnes and Noble today at 1 pm to sign copies of his book Chasing Space.

Chrisman Mill Road railroad crossing closed
The Chrisman Mill Road railroad crossing – near Meadows Golf and Swim Club – will be closed to thru traffic June 12-14.
Norfolk Southern is closing the crossing in order to rework it. The crossing will not be passable on those days. Motorists should find an alternate route.
