Auburn High School will have a new girls’ basketball coach this fall with the announcement that April Ketterer has been appointed to the post.
She replaces Eddie Maynard who also coaches volleyball at the school. This coming season, the Eagles return almost everyone to a team heavy-laden with underclassman.
Ketterer is no stranger to the Auburn program as she has coached the middle school team for the past two years, and it was that familiarity that drew her to the varsity opening.
She played basketball for Christiansburg High School and went on to play basketball and volleyball at Bluefield College where she graduated from in 1989. Since then, she has taught physical education in the Floyd County school system for the past 28 years.
In the ‘90s, Ketterer coached basketball in Floyd including stints with the jayvee and varsity teams under Allen Cantrell.
“I love coaching basketball and I want to see the (Auburn) program to grow into what it was years ago. I have a daughter in middle school, and I want her and her classmates to have a program that they can be proud of. I started coaching Auburn eighth grade two years ago and know that there is a lot of potential. I have had some great girls come through the middle school program and know that they can continue to have a winning program,” she said.
Ketterer expects to build a competitive program.
“When the girls leave Auburn, I want them to have a love for the game and look back on the years that they played as great memories. They will know how to work with others to accomplish team goals while meeting personal goals,” she said.
This program will not just be her program, according to Ketterer, but the program of all those involved. “We are working to build a great coaching staff, and I plan to be involved in the program from the middle school up. This is not about me it is about the girls and all those involved in the program. I have had some great volunteers in the past and they are the ones helping to build the future,” she concluded.
The new coach will continue to teach in Floyd County and travel to Auburn during the basketball season. She and her family reside in Riner.
