Walter Daniel “Dan” Cook Jr. was born on Spruce Run Road, Newport on April 16, 1938 and on Sunday he went to his heavenly home.
Dan served as Police Officer for Montgomery and Giles County. He then became Credit Manager for Firestone in Blacksburg, but many Virginia Tech employees remember him as the guy with the handle-bar mustache that handed him their paycheck from a small window in Burruss Hall while he was employed by the Treasurers Office at VPI&SU as Head Cashier. He was also a member of the Newport Masonic Lodge #261 A.F. & A.M..
Dan has joined the love of his life, Bobbie Wilson Cook. He is now reminiscing with his Mom and Dad, Mamie Sue McCoy Cook and Walter Daniel Cook Sr. and his sister, Joyce Cook Tribble and an infant brother, Sherman Cook.
He leaves to cherish his memory, Michele Dawn “Mitzi” Cook of the home and her two children, Katie Smith and Steven Smith.
He is also survived by two men who are proud to share his name; son, Walter Daniel “Dan” Cook III (and wife Elaine and stepson Kevin Cupp) and Toppa’s little Buddy, Walter Daniel Cook IV.
The family will receive friends at McCoy Funeral Home tomorrow, from 12-2 p.m. Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. in Memorial Gardens on North Main Street in Blacksburg with Rev. Roger Henderson officiating.
Instead of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Newport Volunteer Rescue Squad P.O. Box 144 Newport VA 24128.
