County offices closed, Tuesday
The following Montgomery County offices and facilities will be closed in observance of Independence Day, on Monday, July 3, and Tuesday, July 4: County Administrative Offices, Health Department, Clerk of Circuit Court, Social Services, Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library, General District Court, Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court.

Closed Tuesday, July 4). Montgomery County Administrative Offices will re-open on Wednesday, July 5, at 8:30 a.m.
Waste management, Tuesday
There will be no refuse/recycling for the Northwest Quadrant. Makeup service will be Wednesday, July 5. Please have all refuse and recycling at the curb by 7 a.m.
Closed Town Council Work Session, Wednesday
Christiansburg Town Council will hold a closed work session on Wednesday, July 5, at 6 p.m. in administrative conference room of Town Hall. The request for a closed meeting is under Virginia Code Section 2.2-3711(A)(1), for the discussion, consideration, or interviews of prospective candidates for employment, assignment, appointment, promotion, performance, demotion, salaries, disciplining, or resignation of specific public officers, appointees, or employees of any public body. The closed meeting pertains to the Town Manager position.
Aquatic Advisory Board- Cancelled, Wednesday
The Aquatic Advisory Board will not meet in July. The next meeting is scheduled for August 2 at 4 p.m.
Blacksburg Police Department’s Citizens Police Academy registration
Blacksburg Police Department’s Citizens Police Academy will start Tuesday, Sept. 5 and will be held every Tuesday through Nov. 14 from 6-8 p.m.

Blacksburg July 4 Parade Registration
The 31st annual July 4th parade in Blacksburg will set off at 2 p.m. from the Old Blacksburg Middle School on Main Street, travel along Main Street, and end near the Alumni Mall. This year’s theme is “Let Freedom Ring.”
Parade entries are needed, and can be floats, marchers, antique vehicles, wagons, bicycles, sports teams, businesses, horses, bands, race cars, scouts, etc.
The Mount Tabor Ruritan Club sponsors the parade, and also the movie “Annie,” which will be shown after the parade in The Lyric Theatre on College Avenue. It will be the ‘classic’ version, with sing-a-long subtitles.
The Town of Blacksburg will have music, food, and entertainments near the Recreation Center on 725 Patrick Henry Drive, beginning at 6 p.m., followed by fireworks at 9:30 p.m. Call Parks & Rec at 540-443-1100 for information on the evening events. July Fish Fry, July 8
Mount Tabor Ruritan Club will hold its July Fish Fry on Saturday, July 8 from 5-7 p.m. at Slusser’s Chapel Picnic Shelter, 1543 Mount Tabor Rd, Blacksburg. All-you-can-eat fish, fries and slaw; Homemade desserts; and beverages. Adults-$8, children under 12-$4, (under 3)-free, carry-outs-$8. The Blacksburg Community Band will be playing. NRCC offering handgun safety class, July 18-20
New River Community College will offer a handgun safety class on Tuesday, July 18, and Thursday, July 20.
Both class meetings will take place from 6-9 p.m. at 206 Edwards Hall in Dublin. Range time will be offered on the Saturday following the class.
The cost of the course is $60.
The six-hour classroom portion of the course, instructed by Joey Williams, is required. However, range time is optional. The class is intended for individuals who are applying for a handgun permit through the courts, and will cover topics such as the nomenclature of revolvers and/or semi-automatic handguns and safety issues related to handgun ownership. Participants will also learn how to care for, maintain and store their handguns.

Boating safety course for operators of boats and personal watercraft, July 23
The boating safety course will be held on Sunday, July 23 from 8-5 p.m. at Water’s Edge Building, Claytor Lake State Park, 6620 Ben H. Bolen Drive, Dublin. The course is taught by the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 83 and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF). Materials and instruction are free.
Bring a highlighter, pencil and lunch. Each graduate earns a wallet card showing successful completion of the class. Most major insurance companies endorse the course and allow insurance premium discounts to graduates.
This course is approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators and recognized by the United States Coast Guard.
