Blacksburg Police Department’s Citizens Police Academy will start Tuesday, Sept. 5 and will be held every Tuesday through Nov. 14 from 6-8 p.m.

Micah’s Backpack
During the summer months, Micah’s Backpack is seeking volunteers to help pack bags, load cars, restock shelves, and break down packaging on Wednesday nights at 6 pm. Set-up begins at 5:30 pm.
When school resumes, they go back to packing on Thursday nights at 6 pm. Volunteers meet at Saint Michael Lutheran Church, 2308 Merrimac Road, Blacksburg.

Farmacy Garden
A community garden is located right next to the Health and Human Services Building (right next to RSVP). Volunteers are needed to help the Montgomery County Health Department with the garden this season. The hours are Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 9am-12pm. They grow a wide array of vegetable crops, as well as fruit crops (and just installed some berry bushes and brambles.) All volunteers get to take home some produce, so this opportunity would be especially good for anyone that might need a little extra help affording fresh fruits and veggies. They have six raised beds in the garden that are senior accessible (four that you can work in from a seated position and two that you can work in standing). Call RSVP for more details.
Portion of Brown Street closed, today
Public Works crews will be working on water system improvements near the intersection of Brown and Montgomery Streets on today.
Brown Street will be closed between both Montgomery Street entrances.
Water service will be off from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the following homes on Lucas Street: 320, 330, 325, 335, 340 and 360. The following homes on Brown Street will also be affected: 340, 355, 405 and 410.
Public Works crews will be handing out notices at the above-mentioned addresses to inform residents of the temporary disruption in water service.
Portion of Huckleberry Trail closed
Repair work will close the newest portion of the Huckleberry Trail beginning yesterday. The contractor will be making final repairs to the new portion, which runs from Providence Boulevard to the Food Lion Shopping Center. The work is expected to last about two weeks. The trail will be completely closed to through traffic during this time.
Road shoulder and ditch repairs on West Main Street
Public Works crews will be performing road shoulder and ditch repairs on West Main Street – between Depot Street and Moose Drive – beginning Monday, July 10.
The repair work will affect traffic patterns. Eastbound traffic will still be able to pass, with minor lane shifts. But, between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., westbound traffic will be detoured onto Moose Drive, then to College Street and Depot Street, before returning to West Main Street.
Work is expected to be complete July 21, but that schedule is subject to change due to weather or other factors.
Mingle at the Market, today
Come out to the Blacksburg Farmer’s Market, located on 100 Draper Road SW, to see music performed by Old Man Kelly and The Street Sweepers. The event is from 4-6 p.m. and will feature local wine and beer as well.
CAC summer awards, July 14-16
This weekend, July 14-16, the Christiansburg Aquatic Center will be hosting the Summer Awards. The pools will be closed Friday-Sunday.
CAC will be hosting the Age Group Champs July 20-23. On Thursday, July 20, the competition pool will be open 7- 11 a.m. (50M lap lanes). The leisure and therapy pools will be open 5:30 a.m.-12 p.m. Pools will be closed all day July 21-23.
The Roanoke Valley Aquatic Association will be at the CAC July 28-29. Pools will be closed both days and will reopen Sunday, July 30 at 1 p.m.
Please note that if you are a six-month or yearly member, we will add the days we are closed to your membership, just ask the front desk during your next visit.

NRCC offering handgun safety class, July 18-20
New River Community College will offer a handgun safety class on Tuesday, July 18, and Thursday, July 20.
Both class meetings will take place from 6-9 p.m. at 206 Edwards Hall in Dublin. Range time will be offered on the Saturday following the class.
The cost of the course is $60.
The six-hour classroom portion of the course, instructed by Joey Williams, is required. However, range time is optional. The class is intended for individuals who are applying for a handgun permit through the courts, and will cover topics such as the nomenclature of revolvers and/or semi-automatic handguns and safety issues related to handgun ownership. Participants will also learn how to care for, maintain and store their handguns.

Hahn Horticulture Garden, July 20
Thursday, July 20, 2017 9-11 a.m. -Tour of the Hale-YMCA Community Garden with Jenny Schwanke Garden Coordinator. The Hale YMCA Community Garden hosts 70 families from about 13 countries growing food using sustainable organic practices. Monthly potlucks and gardening classes along with lots of volunteering by Virginia Tech students and community members makes for a vibrant garden community.

Boating safety course for operators of boats and personal watercraft, July 23
The boating safety course will be held on Sunday, July 23 from 8-5 p.m. at Water’s Edge Building, Claytor Lake State Park, 6620 Ben H. Bolen Drive, Dublin. The course is taught by the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 83 and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF). Materials and instruction are free.
Bring a highlighter, pencil and lunch. Each graduate earns a wallet card showing successful completion of the class. Most major insurance companies endorse the course and allow insurance premium discounts to graduates.
This course is approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators and recognized by the United States Coast Guard. 3rd annual Jazz & Ribs Feast, July 28

Montgomery County extension fair, August 12
The 2017 Montgomery County Extension Fair will be held Saturday-Sunday, August 12-13 at the Alphin-Stuart Livestock Teaching Arena in Blacksburg. The fair will include youth and adult exhibits, a livestock and horse show, demonstrations, fair games and activities for kids, lunch concessions and more. Many of the activities are open to 4-H and non 4-H members (exhibits, games, etc).
Heritage Day, August 26
The Montgomery Museum is seeking volunteers for Heritage Day on
Saturday, August 26. The event will feature food, live entertainment, craft
activities, a pie cook-off and much more! Volunteers are needed to donate
baked goods, help with set-up from 8-10 am, help with the silent auction,
serve hot dogs and other food items at the food tent during the event, and
cleanup from 3-4 p.m.
