Otis Alexander O’Dell died at his home on Monday surrounded by family. Born June, 14, 1930, he was the son of Amos and Minnie O’Dell and lived his life in Hiwassee, Va.
He loved the mountains and the serenity of the area that he called home for 84 years. He was a veteran of the Korean War and a deacon of the New River Primitive Baptist Church. He was proud to serve both roles that greatly impacted his life. Pops was a man of integrity, true to his word and exemplified a work ethic second to none. He was an avid gardener and produce farmer whose vegetables were enjoyed throughout the area for years. He worked at Klopman Mills for 25 years and then started his yard/mowing business at the age of 58. He provided meticulous lawn care until he retired in 2015.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lois Crigger O’Dell, his daughter and son-in law, Vena and Bentley Duncan, son and daughter-in law, R.A and Velena O’Dell. He was “paee” to his three grandchildren: Brooks Duncan and his wife Katt, Landon O’Dell and his fiancée Brook Padian and Afton O’Dell and enjoyed parting his words of wisdom and life stories to each grandchild. He is also survived by his siblings: Eunice Marshall, Frances Thompson and Elbert O’Dell. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Ann Jonas and Junior O’Dell.
The family thanks the staff at Carilion Hospice of the New River Valley for their compassion and care during this journey. While flowers are appreciated, donations may be made to the NRV Carilion Hospice at 701 Randolph Street, Radford, VA 24141.
