Blacksburg Police Department’s Citizens Police Academy will start Tuesday, Sept. 5 and will be held every Tuesday through Nov. 14 from 6-8 p.m.

Moss Arts Center
The Moss Arts Center’s current art exhibition highlights the outstanding artistry and skill of artists in Appalachia. Featuring the work of 17 regional artists using a variety of techniques, “From These Woods” draws attention to the potential of the arts for creating an ecologically and economically sustainable future in the region. The exhibition showcases a variety of different art forms and features pieces made by woodturning and carving, as well as woven baskets, sculpture, and furniture.

Build a support system with people who understand. Alzheimer’s Association caregiver support groups, conducted by trained facilitators, are a safe place for caregivers, family and friends of persons with dementia to develop a support system, exchange practical information on caregiving challenges and possible solutions. Talk through issues and ways of coping. Share feelings, needs and concerns. Learn about community resources.
Micah’s Backpack
During the summer months, Micah’s Backpack is seeking volunteers to help pack bags, load cars, restock shelves, and break down packaging on Wednesday nights at 6 pm. Set-up begins at 5:30 pm.
When school resumes, they go back to packing on Thursday nights at 6 pm. Volunteers meet at Saint Michael Lutheran Church, 2308 Merrimac Road, Blacksburg.

Farmacy Garden
A community garden is located right next to the Health and Human Services Building (right next to RSVP). Volunteers are needed to help the Montgomery County Health Department with the garden this season. The hours are Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 9am-12pm. They grow a wide array of vegetable crops, as well as fruit crops (and just installed some berry bushes and brambles.) All volunteers get to take home some produce, so this opportunity would be especially good for anyone that might need a little extra help affording fresh fruits and veggies. They have six raised beds in the garden that are senior accessible (four that you can work in from a seated position and two that you can work in standing). Call RSVP for more details.

United Way will be collecting school supplies at the VT Corporate Research Center’s Food Truck Thursday Lunch from 11:30-1:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 20.
Hahn Horticulture Garden, tomorrow
Thursday, July 20, 2017 9-11 a.m. -Tour of the Hale-YMCA Community Garden with Jenny Schwanke Garden Coordinator. The Hale YMCA Community Garden hosts 70 families from about 13 countries growing food using sustainable organic practices. Monthly potlucks and gardening classes along with lots of volunteering by Virginia Tech students and community members makes for a vibrant garden community.

Boating safety course
for operators of boats and personal watercraft, July 23
The boating safety course will be held on Sunday, July 23 from 8-5 p.m. at Water’s Edge Building, Claytor Lake State Park, 6620 Ben H. Bolen Drive, Dublin. The course is taught by the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 83 and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF). Materials and instruction are free.
Bring a highlighter, pencil and lunch. Each graduate earns a wallet card showing successful completion of the class. Most major insurance companies endorse the course and allow insurance premium discounts to graduates.
This course is approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators and recognized by the United States Coast Guard. Montgomery County extension fair, August 12
The 2017 Montgomery County Extension Fair will be held Saturday-Sunday, August 12-13 at the Alphin-Stuart Livestock Teaching Arena in Blacksburg. The fair will include youth and adult exhibits, a livestock and horse show, demonstrations, fair games and activities for kids, lunch concessions and more. Many of the activities are open to 4-H and non 4-H members (exhibits, games, etc).
Heritage Day, August 26
The Montgomery Museum is seeking volunteers for Heritage Day on
Saturday, August 26. The event will feature food, live entertainment, craft
activities, a pie cook-off and much more! Volunteers are needed to donate
baked goods, help with set-up from 8-10 am, help with the silent auction,
serve hot dogs and other food items at the food tent during the event, and
cleanup from 3-4 p.m.
