Christiansburg High School has announced the hiring of two coaches for its boys and girls basketball programs. Athletic Director James Woods publicly released the hiring on Thursday of Mike Hunter for the boys’ job and Joe Hutson for the girls’ opening.
Hunter, a native of Clifton Forge, attended Alleghany High School where he was a basketball, football, and track and field athlete.
Due to his athletic accomplishments, he was inducted to the Hall of Fame at Alleghany High School. Following his senior year, he then went on to attend Ferrum College and played basketball for the Wasps where he earned All-Conference honors along with becoming Ferrum’s second all-time leading scorer.
Hunter has been coaching basketball for the past 18 years at the AAU, middle and high school levels. Most recently, he has served as an assistant boys’ varsity coach for the Blue Demons.
Outside of basketball, Hunter iis a Special Education teacher at Christiansburg High School and volunteers his time with the Christiansburg Middle school baseball program.
Hutson is also no stranger to area basketball. The Charleston, West Virginia native is a 1991 graduate of Nitro High School where he played both football and basketball.
He Hutson earned a Bachelor’s degree from Campbell University in 1995 and a Master’s degree from Radford University in 2000. Then beginning his coaching career working with recreational sports teams in South Korea while serving in the United States Air Force.
He also has experience as both an assistant and head coach of several successful AAU programs in the Roanoke area.
Hutson has a passion for teaching and helping young athletes develop their basketball skills and abilities. He and his wife Tanya have been married for 21 years and they have two kids.
