The lane closures on South Main Street between Airport Road and Hubbard Street will continue through Thursday, July 27, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m.
These closures are needed for street resurfacing. Travel delays should be expected.

Blacksburg Police Department’s Citizens Police Academy registration
Blacksburg Police Department’s Citizens Police Academy will start Tuesday, Sept. 5 and will be held every Tuesday through Nov. 14 from 6-8 p.m.

Moss Arts Center, artists of Appalachia
The Moss Arts Center’s current art exhibition highlights the outstanding artistry and skill of artists in Appalachia. Featuring the work of 17 regional artists using a variety of techniques, “From These Woods” draws attention to the potential of the arts for creating an ecologically and economically sustainable future in the region. The exhibition showcases a variety of different art forms and features pieces made by woodturning and carving, as well as woven baskets, sculpture, and furniture.

Build a support system with people who understand. Alzheimer’s Association caregiver support groups, conducted by trained facilitators, are a safe place for caregivers, family and friends of persons with dementia to develop a support system, exchange practical information on caregiving challenges and possible solutions. Talk through issues and ways of coping. Share feelings, needs and concerns. Learn about community resources.
Micah’s Backpack
During the summer months, Micah’s Backpack is seeking volunteers to help pack bags, load cars, restock shelves, and break down packaging on Wednesday nights at 6 pm. Set-up begins at 5:30 pm.
When school resumes, they go back to packing on Thursday nights at 6 pm. Volunteers meet at Saint Michael Lutheran Church, 2308 Merrimac Road, Blacksburg.

Farmacy Garden, volunteers needed
A community garden is located right next to the Health and Human Services Building (right next to RSVP). Volunteers are needed to help the Montgomery County Health Department with the garden this season. The hours are Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 9am-12pm. They grow a wide array of vegetable crops, as well as fruit crops (and just installed some berry bushes and brambles.) All volunteers get to take home some produce, so this opportunity would be especially good for anyone that might need a little extra help affording fresh fruits and veggies. They have six raised beds in the garden that are senior accessible (four that you can work in from a seated position and two that you can work in standing). Call RSVP for more details.
Red Cross blood drive, Aug. 4
The annual Blood Drive at Virginia Tech’s Lane Stadium will be held on Friday, August 4 from 11-4 p.m. Volunteers are needed on this day to work registration, canteen, and provide donor assistance. Parking passes will be provided in advance by the Red Cross. For more information, call RSVP.
Gardens of Elissa Steeves, Aug. 10
Thursday, August 10, 2017 9-11 a.m. -visit the gardens of Elissa Steeves. Join the staff of the Hahn Garden for a visit to the beautiful and eclectic gardens of Elissa Steeves. Her gardens have been featured in Southern Living magazine. We will have a van to carpool since parking is tight. Montgomery County extension fair, Aug. 12
The 2017 Montgomery County Extension Fair will be held Saturday-Sunday, August 12-13 at the Alphin-Stuart Livestock Teaching Arena in Blacksburg. The fair will include youth and adult exhibits, a livestock and horse show, demonstrations, fair games and activities for kids, lunch concessions and more. Many of the activities are open to 4-H and non 4-H members (exhibits, games, etc).
Public input meeting, Aug. 15
MCPS will host a public input meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 15, at 7 p.m. at Christiansburg High School. The community will be asked to provide input on the proposed capital plans for schools in Christiansburg. These plans include new athletic fields, an upgraded high school building, an expansion on the current CHS and the possibility of a new elementary school in the NW area. Current recommendations for capital projects can be found on the capital projects website.
Quartet performance, Aug. 19
The Primitive Quartet and Kevin Kemp will be at Grayson County High School Auditorium in Independence, VA. Admission is $10. Doors will open at 4 p.m.

Solar eclipse viewing, Aug. 21
The optometrists of Invision, located in Christiansburg, are hosting a Solar Eclipse viewing party on August 21st. This event will provide a fun and safe way for the community to enjoy the natural phenomenon of the coast-to-coast solar eclipse. There will be safety information, solar eclipse viewing glasses, and astronomy themed snacks (moonpies!). Dr. Scott Mann welcomes the opportunity to discuss the serious eye safety implications of viewing a solar eclipse. Heritage Day, Aug. 26
The Montgomery Museum is seeking volunteers for Heritage Day on Saturday, August 26. The event will feature food, live entertainment, craft activities, a pie cook-off and much more! Volunteers are needed to donate baked goods, help with set-up from 8-10 am, help with the silent auction, serve hot dogs and other food items at the food tent during the event, and cleanup from 3-4 p.m.

HPV clinic, Aug. 11
The Health Dept and RaCPS is holding immunization clinic Aug.11 at BH from 11-2. There will be a Flu clinic in Oct. and the 2nd HPV vaccine will be offered. The 3rd HPV clinic will be held in April at the HS for those over age 15. In most instances, children who do not have their Tdap booster will not be allowed to attend school until proof of immunization is offered. The Flu and HPV clinics are strictly optional.
Public Input Meeting for Christiansburg Community, Aug. 15
