Cook inks pro basketball deal
Former Virginia Tech forward Sidney Cook has signed a contract to play for Enea AZS Poznan in Poland, the club announced Friday. Poznan competes in the 1 Liga Group B, in the second tier of professional Polish basketball.
During her senior season, Cook averaged 12.7 points and 8.2 rebounds per game, helping the Hokies reach 20-win plateau and the Elite Eight of the WNIT. Her 12 double-doubles on the season ranked third in the ACC and 43rd nationally.
Cook, who recently graduated from Tech with a public relations degree, ranks ninth all-time in program history in rebounds with a 6.5 average.
Cook is the most recent Hokie alum to sign professionally. Earlier this month, Vanessa Panousis signed with the Adelaide Lightning in Australia.
Volleyball clinic
The Virginia Tech volleyball team in cooperation with the Christiansburg Recreation Department will hold a volleyball clinic on Sunday, August 20 from 1-3 p.m. The clinic is free and open to girls ages 7-12.

Simmons joins strength staff
Virginia Tech Athletics announced the addition of Charles Simmons to the strength and conditioning staff for football as an assistant director on Friday. Simmons joins an experienced group of performance coaches under the direction of Ben Hilgart, Associate AD for Strength & Conditioning.
Simmons spent this past spring at Texas, one of three positions he’s held in a Power Five program, where he assisted the football strength staff. Prior to his time in Austin, Simmons spent the 2016 season at Baylor where he worked with football, cross country, volleyball, soccer and equestrian. He is a certified member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association.
The San Antonio native broke into the field as an intern at SMU, where he earned his first full-time position directing and implementing programs for the equestrian, women’s track and sprint teams. He then moved to California – Berkeley where he assisted with Cal’s football, baseball and rugby teams.
Highlanders’ lacrosse team honored
In just its second season, the Radford women’s lacrosse team was honored as an Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Zag Sports Academic Honor Squad for the second straight year, the organization announced on Wednesday afternoon.
The IWLCA has named 311 schools across Division I, II, III, and NAIA as IWLCA Zag Sports Academic Honor Squads for the 2016-17 academic year. To qualify for this prestigious honor, the women’s lacrosse team must have posted a 3.0 or higher team GPA for the academic year.
Radford was one of six Big South teams represented on the list as Winthrop, Campbell, High Point, Longwood and Presbyterian were honored.
