Blacksburg tennis player honored
Anne Jones, of Blacksburg has been named the Most Valuable Member for the Mid-Atlantic Region of the United States Tennis Association.
Jones received the award for helping tennis grow in the community. She teaches tennis for Blacksburg Parks & Recreation and has helped “Blacksburg catch the tennis bug by offering clinics, captaining teams and encouraging new players, both young and old, to get out on the court and have fun playing tennis.
She was also instrumental in creating the Blacksburg Community Tennis Association.”
Aquatics center closed for maintenance
The Christiansburg Aquatic Center will be closed August 14-25 for yearly maintenance. This closure allows staff to perform necessary maintenance that cannot be completed while open to the public.
ReNew the New event
Volunteers from Giles, Montgomery, and Pulaski Counties, and the city of Radford, will host a Fall 2017 ReNew the New Regional River Clean-up Event on August 26.
All five localities are cleaning-up different sections of the New River watershed, whether it be on the New River or on one of its tributaries. This is the second year the region is convening for this ReNew the New event after last year’s award-winning clean-up on the New River in Radford The New River Valley Regional Commission has played a coordinating role in assisting the different localities of the region come together and collaborate in preparing for this event.

Hokie on SAAC committee
The Atlantic Coast Conference announced Monday that junior Jaila Tolbert, a middle blocker and rightside hitter on the Virginia Tech volleyball team, has been named the league’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) representative to the National Division I SAAC.
Each Division I conference selects one student-athlete to represent and partner with the NCAA and vote on legislation regarding student-athlete welfare. The Division I SAAC reports directly to the Division I Leadership Council, and one SAAC member participates in each meeting of the Leadership Council. It marks the first time in Tech history that a student-athlete was chosen to represent the conference’s SAAC office.
Each member institution of the NCAA has a SAAC for student-athletes to provide insight and input on the rules, regulations and policies that effect student-athletes’ lives.
Tech external team honored
Members of the Virginia Tech athletics external team were honored with national awards, as presented by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA).
Through CoSIDA, the Hokies earned best in nation honors for three submissions including the 2016-17 Men’s Basketball Game Day Program cover, the online magazine, Inside Hokie Sports and an infographic feature on Athletics. Tech also was honored with the top-two spots in the video feature category for “Sounds of Gameday” and “Name that Tune – Justin Bibbs vs. Ahmed Hill.”
Tech’s marketing team earned the silver medal in the Fan Giveaway Promotion category for the replica jerseys given away to men’s and women’s basketball early bird season ticket renewals. The Hokies also earned Honorable Mention honors for NACMA Marketing Team of the Year for the second consecutive year, recognizing Tech’s success in revenue generating, branding and fan experience.
