Kirk Litton has been on the job for two weeks as the new athletic director at Eastern Montgomery, but he is no stranger to the Montgomery County school system after serving in the same position at Blacksburg Middle and Christiansburg High schools.
“I think it’s a great opportunity for me, and I’m excited about being here,” Litton said.
He has served as the athletic director at BMS for the past five years and was at CHS from 2005 to 2012. In 2012, Litton was named the “state athletic director of the year” in Group AA.
Litton replaces Anthony Kidd, who had been at the school for two years and left to become assistant principal at an elementary school in Pulaski County.
“I was looking to get back to the high school level for several years, and Eastern Montgomery seemed like a good fit,” Litton said.
Previously, he had been at Christiansburg High School for 27 years serving as a coach for football, baseball and softball.
The Bluefield State graduate and Bluefield native admits his long-term goal had always been to become an athletic director. He came to Christiansburg in 1985 to teach math.
Stability is an important concept for Litton in the new post.
“I want to give them some stability here at Eastern Montgomery, and I’m committed to Eastern Montgomery,” he said. “They (EMHS) need that to improve their sports programs.”
Litton has been spending a lot of time meeting with the school’s coaches learning about their style and their individual teams.
“We have a lot of good coaches here that work hard. My job is to give them the best resources available. That’s important to them,” he concluded.
