Volleyball organization meeting Sept. 5
The Radford Recreation Department will hold an organization meeting for its Fall Co-Ed volleyball league on Tuesday, Sept. 5 at 6 p.m. Any team interested in playing must have a representative present at this meeting. For more information, contact Chuck Morris at 731-3633.
Kinney named associate head coach
The Virginia Tech men’s soccer program has announced Jeff Kinney as its Associate Head Coach. Kinney has spent the past five seasons as an assistant on Mike Brizendine’s staff.
Throughout his Tech career, Kinney has been directly responsible for all facets of the program including; recruiting, managing the budget, training sessions and scheduling.
He also works closely with student-athletes in the classroom, helping them achieve academic success. In his time in Blacksburg, the program has been honored with the NSCAA Team Academic Award five times. Kinney also started a continuous learning leadership program for assistant coaches across the athletic department to receive training to help them with their career aspirations.
In 2016, he helped to guide the Hokies to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament and a No. 8 NSCAA final ranking. The 2016 squad won 13 games and posted eight shutouts, the best marks since he joined the Tech staff.
Concord announces online broadcast dates
The Concord University Athletic Department and First Media Services have announced the dates for radio coverage for the upcoming football season.
All games can be heard on Willie 94.5 FM in southern West Virginia and around the worldwide at www.mywillie.com. To date, CU football radio broadcasts have reached over 40 states and approximately 20 countries throughout the world.
Firearms training class Sept. 7
The Christiansburg Parks and Recreation Department is offering a Virginia Firearms Safety Training course on Thursday, Sept. 7 for those individuals seeking a concealed weapons permit. Upon completion of the course, attendees will receive a certification used to apply for a permit at the Montgomery County Courthouse.
The cost is $35 for EMS personnel and $45 for all other individuals. Registration ends September 1. For more information, call 382-2349.
Hokie grapplers add Stanford
Virginia Tech head wrestling Coach Tony Robie announced Tuesday that the Hokies will face Stanford in their season opener at Cassell Coliseum on Saturday, Nov. 4. A start time will be decided in the near future.
Stanford joins a home non-conference slate for Tech that features Central Michigan, Missouri, West Virginia and Lehigh. The Hokies will be wrestling Mizzou in the Moss Arts Center
The dual will be the first ever meeting between the Hokies and the Cardinal. Virginia Tech last wrestled a Pac-12 opponent in 2016 when the Hokies defeated Arizona State 28-12 at the Virginia Duals. The Hokies are 7-1 all-time against programs from the Pac-12.
