Michael “Mikey” Clinton Lester, Jr., 40, of Rocky Mount, left this earth for his heavenly home on Monday, Sept. 4, 2017 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital after losing his fight with cancer. His loving parents were at his side. Michael has always been fondly known at Mikey.
Mikey was born June 9, 1977 at Camp Lejeune, N.C. at the Regional Naval Medical Center to Michael and Brenda Webb Lester.
He attended grade school at Gary Elementary School in Gary, W. Va. He also attended Belle Heth Elementary and Dalton Intermediate Schools in Radford, Va. He graduated from Radford High School where he was a member of both the J.V. and varsity football and baseball teams.
He served his country proudly in the U. S. Army where he was in field artillery. He received the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal and the Army Service Ribbon.
Mikey loved to fish and hunt or do anything outdoors. He loved sports and was an avid Florida State football fan, UNC Tarheel basketball fan, and a fan of the Detroit Lions, NY Yankees and NY Knicks. One of his favorite past times was drawing and sketching his favorite subject Spiderman. He enjoyed playing sports with his sons and nephews.
He was a born again Christian and was of the Baptist faith. He had been attending Westlake Baptist Church when his health would allow.
If you were a stranger when you met Mikey, you were a friend thereafter. He loved his family and his friends passionately.
Left to cherish his memory are his beloved children, Shayna Lester of Dublin, Va., Brandon Lester of the home, and Taylor and Kaylee Lester of Patuxent, Md.; his parents, Michael and Brenda Lester of Rocky Mount, Va.; sister, Kristiane Lester (Chris Hoffrath) of Radford, Va.; brother, Matthew Lester of Rocky Mount, Va.; his beloved grandmother, Dorothy Marie Webb of Goodview, Va. formerly of Pageton, W.Va.; his nephews, Cody Mitchell, Peyton Lester, Drake Summers, Gage Summers and Ezekiel Hoffrath; nieces, Cadence Lester ad Jocelyn Summers; dear maternal uncles, Luther (Tina) Web and John (Gina) Webb, all of Radford, Va.; dear maternal aunts, Dorothy (Mike) Angove of Goodview, Va., Tina (John) Cecil of Christiansburg, Va., and Bobbi (Kevin) Fisher of Denver, N.C.; dear paternal uncle, Larry (Karen) Lester of Lake Wylie, S.C.; dear paternal aunts, Linda (Johnny) Dale, Debbie (Mike) Cochran, and Dianne (Bill) Rose, all of Pageton, W.Va.; cousins; special friend, Heather Boitnott of Rocky Mount, Va.; longtime best friend, Larnell Lewis of Pensacola, Fla.; and his beloved pit bull, Macy.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Luther Webb, Sr. of Pageton, W.Va., paternal grandparents, Bob and Alline Lester of Thorpe, W.Va., and uncle, Terry Lester of Lenoir, N.C.
The family received friends Thursday, Sept. 7, 2017 at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford.
Funeral services began at 2 p.m. with Rev. Jim Blevins officiating. Interment followed in the Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Dublin. Honorary pallbearers will be John Michael Webb, Ryan Webb, Justin Dale, Brandon Rose, Larnelle Lewis and Mark Franklin.
The Lester family is in the care of Mullins Funeral Home & Crematory in Radford.
