Glen Harris, of Glen’s Body Shop in Christiansburg, brought his 1950 Mercury, as well as a ’49, to the show. Harris, a well-known custom-car enthusiast, said, “it was a tough jog, ‘chopping’ the tops of the Mercury’s, from their original high-profile roofs. These are my favorite customs. It’s a nice day, and I’m glad everyone is having a good time.” The 1949 and 1950 Mercury coupes are a ‘cult’ favorite, in the US.

Sydney Smith, of Riner, gets a perspective from the driver’s seat of drag-racer Steve McGuire’s ride. McGuire takes his four dragsters to events throughout the region. When asked about his sponsors, McGuire said, “I don’t have any, but it would be nice! My family works together on our runs; it costs us a lot of time and money, but we like it, and I sure do like driving fast!”

Travis Lester said, “we want to give back to the community, offering this admission-free event. We use proceeds to buy equipment, which we use to give back to our Riner residents. I’d like to thank the committee members that joined me, David Harris, Donnie Gatton, and the RVFD Ladies Auxiliary. We couldn’t ask for a better Riner, Virginia day, great crowd, and fine cars and trucks!”
