Charles Robert “Bob” Carner, Sr., 93, of McCoy died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2017, at Virginia Veterans Care Center. He was born in Princeton, West Virginia on December 18,1923 to the late Charles Johnson and Myrtle McCoy Carner. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Geneva Hamblin Carner; his brother, Harold Carner and his stepmother, Irene Dillon Carner.
Bob was a veteran of WWII having served in the U.S. Army Air Force and a lifelong member of Centennial Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). He was a member of the Eggleston Masonic Lodge #309 and the Hunter’s Masonic Lodge #156 for over 70 years.
Bob, along with his wife, Geneva, owned and operated Bob’s Store in McCoy for 53 years, retiring in 2000. He was a founding member of the Longshop-McCoy Fire Department and Rescue Squad and remained active. He was an avid outdoorsman and, in younger years, enjoyed playing baseball. He later assisted the McCoy baseball team in the Mountain View League.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Charles Robert “Bobby”, Jr. and Robin B. Carner of Blacksburg; granddaughter, Jessica C. Snider and husband, Jeremy of McCoy; great-granddaughters, Sydney Jane Snider and Abigail Jordan Snider; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were conducted on Sept. 18, 2017 in the Centennial Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) with Pastor Steve Allen, Pastor Zeke Zanatas, and Mrs. Barbara Crockett officiating. Interment was held at the Centennial Christian Church Cemetery.
The family received friends at the McCoy Funeral Home. Flowers will be appreciated and memorial contributions may be made to the Centennial Christian Church Cemetery.
