The Blacksburg Interfaith Food Pantry will be celebrating its 30th anniversary on Sunday, Oct. 15 at the Pantry at 706 Harding Ave. from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm.
There will be free food, face-painting, and family friendly games with prizes.
Proclamations will be made by the Town of Blacksburg representatives and live music will be provided by Kat Mills, Panjammers Steel Drum Band, and The New River Valley Boys. Water bottles and tee-shirts giveaways have been donated by Virginia Tech University Bookstore and Volume Two Bookstore and we will be offering tours of the Pantry.
While the majority of the Pantry’s clients work, minimum wage jobs do not always enable recipients to feed their families. The Interfaith Food Pantry was formed as a cooperative effort by area churches and is staffed by volunteers from the participating churches and other organizations. Food and monetary donations come from local churches, civic clubs, schools, businesses, Virginia Tech organizations, and various food drives (including the annual US Postal Drive). We also receive donations from local businesses. In season, fresh vegetables are donated by local residents, and the Virginia Hunters Association contributes butchered venison in the Fall. Several members of our community grow food specifically for the food pantry.
Potential recipients are screened for eligibility by New River Community Action in Christiansburg and by trained volunteers at the Food Pantry. The Pantry offers basic food supplies, once a month, to low-income Blacksburg/McCoy residents or those in emergency situations, including homeless individuals and families.
