Thirty-six individuals from the general community, local companies and organizations volunteered their time as a part of United Way of Montgomery, Radford and Floyd’s Day of Caring 2017 volunteer event on Thursday, September 21.
Volunteers split into teams to complete projects with non-profit agencies throughout the New River Valley such as Valley Interfaith Child Care Center, Goodwill, New River Family Shelter and more.
Volunteers gathered at the United Way office in Downtown Christiansburg at 8:45 a.m. on the 21st to receive their projects and this year’s LIVE UNITED t-shirts. They were then sent to locations across the valley from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m., and assisted with hands-on projects such as sorting and organizing donations, prepping and serving meals, arts and crafts with children and more.
A total of seven companies and organizations volunteered at the event, including: Mountain Lake Lodge, Community Housing Partners, the Town of Blacksburg, Federal-Mogul, HHHunt/Foxridge, Click and Pledge, and the Community Health Center.
“Day of Caring is a great example of how much the people who support our local United Way care about our community. By working with our partner agencies, not only are they helping with these great projects, they also get a hands on understanding of the needs our community has and how they can be better advocates for the services that need our support.” said Marcela Jara, Programs Manager of United Way Montgomery Radford and Floyd.
Day of Caring promotes the spirit and value of volunteerism, increase the awareness of our local partner health and human services agencies and demonstrates what people working together for the good of the community can accomplish.
