Basics of Mountain Biking
The Blacksburg Recreation Department is hosting a class on Sunday, Oct. 8 for individuals 11 and up to learn basic concepts to make yourself a better Mountain Biker and what equipment to have on the trail. Participants can test their new skills on a short ride at Pandapas Pond.
The class requires a bike in proper working order. The fee for the class is $10 for Blacksburg residents and $20 for non-residents. Registration ends Thursday, Oct. 12. For more information or to register, call 443-1100 or visit www.blacksburg.gov/recreation.
Volleyball clinic
The Christiansburg Recreation Department, in cooperation with the Radford University volleyball team, will hold a free volleyball clinic on Sunday, Oct. 15 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. The camp is being instructed by the RU team and coaches, and participants are asked to bring their own ball to the event.

Softball tournament benefits trout rodeo
A coed softball tournament on October 14 in Christiansburg will benefit the Tony L. Huddleston Trout Rodeo. Men will use a 14-inch ball while women an 11-inch ball with all games at Kiwanis

Concord falls to Shepherd
The Concord University football team had its best offensive output of the season, but fell to Shepherd 49-20 Saturday afternoon in Mountain East Conference play at Callaghan Stadium.
SU (4-0, 4-0 MEC) scored 21 unanswered points on two different occasions on its way to the 29-point victory. Concord heads to Glenville State for a 12 p.m. kickoff next Saturday.
Emory & Henry downs W&L
The Emory & Henry (Tenn.) College Football Team (2-2, 1-0 ODAC) scored the game-winning touchdown with just 11 seconds remaining to earn a come-from-behind win over Washington and Lee University (2-2, 0-1 ODAC) Saturday afternoon in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener for both squads.
