Calligraphy, Embossing, and Printmaking Art Exhibit
All Month, at the Blacksburg Library
Elvira M. Skuzinski is a freelance artist based in Blacksburg who enjoys using a wide variety of materials and techniques in unconventional ways. For this exhibit, she drew inspiration from the books, music, and movies available at her local library to create handcrafted pieces that blur the boundary between positive and negative space. The art world traditionally defines positive space as the main focus of a picture, while negative space is what one sees around and between that subject. Her extraordinary skill and passion for these art techniques are evident in her work.

Become a Junior Artist and earn a sketchbook! Just pick up an art card at the front desk, visit Miss Jessie’s Gallery, answer a few questions, then return your signed card to the front desk for a bookmark. Complete five cards, and you will get your very own artist sketchbook. Parental assistance is encouraged, particularly for the littlest Junior Artists!
Meet the Star Stitchers
All Month, at the Blacksburg Library
Embroidery is an ancient and elegant art form using a threaded needle to embellish a surface. Still vibrantly practiced today, embroidery takes many forms from simple and primitive to richly detailed. Members of the Star Stitchers use beads, silk ribbon, charms, threads, yarn, wool, and linen. There’s no limit to creativity and expression when it comes to embroidery. Come visit the Star Stitchers on the October 25 from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM. All skill levels are encouraged and welcome.

Chinese Medical Doctor Joy Yang will explain what you can do to help your body function better and heal faster and more thoroughly. The self-healing skills taught are based on traditional Chinese Medicine. These include acupressure points, moxibustion, mediation, the six healing sounds, cupping, and learning to unblock the Qi in meridians. Physical symptoms related to stress/anxiety that can be resolved include various body pains (e.g. neck, shoulders, back), insomnia, digestion problems, and headaches. Emotional symptoms that can be resolved include emotional eating, uncontrolled crying, irritableness, intrusive thoughts, and more.

The Paleo Diet and Eating Like a Modern Caveman

In this informational Session, Chef Kate Kayne will talk about what it means to “eat like a caveman” and the ‘why’ behind certain foods being included and excluded. Dress the kids up in their Halloween costumes and bring them to the Meadowbrook Center. This event is for children 12 and under. The Trunk or Treat will be held in the parking lot near the playground –behind the Meadowbrook Public Library. There will be sponsors with trunks filled with treats for the children. Many of these vehicles will be decorated as well. Sponsors for this event include ; VFW -Elliston/Shawsville Post 4920 & VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 4920, Meadowbrook Public Library, Friends of the Library-Meadowbrook Chapter, Montgomery County , and other community groups .
