College Avenue will be closed from 2 – 8 p.m. Downtown Blacksburg, Inc., and Blacksburg Police Department. New Life will host a Fall Festival at 130 Jackson Street, the Blacksburg Library will be hosting Halloween crafting from 4:30pm, and Perspective Gallery in Squires Student Center will feature two shows: The Forest and Blacksburg High School Student -Day of the Dead art exhibit.
At the same time, activities will be held throughout downtown Blacksburg from 4-6 p.m.
4:00-6:00pm Trick or Treating at participating downtown businesses between Eheart St and Faculty St.
5:30-6:00pm Costume Contest at the Lyric Theatre for four age groups: 0-3, 4-6, 7-9, & 10-12. All participants will receive a Halloween goodie bag from Downtown Blacksburg, Inc.
Prizes for group winners provided by downtown businesses.
A number of safety measures will be in place for the evening supported by the Blacksburg Police Department and the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets.
Blacksburg Police Department will be promoting their two year-round campaigns: Blacksburg Be Safe, a K-12 initiative, and No Hokie Left Behind, an initiative engaging college-aged people.
Blacksburg Police will host a booth on College Avenue to pass out candy and safety materials.
Extra Police Officers will also be located downtown to assist in traffic calming and safe crossing.
Bright yellow caution tape will be attached to the lampposts along the west side of Main St between College and Roanoke to prevent people stepping off the sidewalk into traffic.
The cadets will be present at the Lee Street and Jackson Street pedestrian crossings on Main Street, and Police officers will assist with crossing Main Street at the Roanoke Street and College Avenue intersections.
“We are confident that these extra measures will help greatly in providing a safer and happier Downtown Trick or Treat experience for the entire community,” the Town said.
