Twenty years ago, the Christiansburg Recreation Center opened its doors for the first time. From 3-7 p.m. on Nov. 7, the Christiansburg Parks and Recreation Department is inviting the community to help celebrate this anniversary.
During the event, admission to the Christiansburg Recreation Center will be free for all community members, and attendees can participate in demos of several recreation classes. Participants can also join in on games of corn hole, ladder ball, pegboard, Jack-O-Lantern toss and more. Additionally, there will be sports activities with prizes given to the winner of each age group. The age groups are 8 and under, 9-12 and 13-18.
Every 30 minutes, a door prize will be given away. All attendees are eligible for door prizes. There will also be free cake and free commemorative T-shirts while supplies last. Cake will be cut at 5:30 p.m. Brugh Coffee, Till and Grill and Toasted by Casey will be on-site for attendees to purchase food. Local businesses and organizations will also be present, including the Montgomery County Animal Shelter.
November 7 is Election Day and the Christiansburg Recreation Center is a polling location. Voters are encouraged to join in on the fun before or after casting a ballot. Montgomery County Public Schools will also be closed that day.
The Christiansburg Recreation Center held its grand opening on Nov. 9, 1997, and it cost $5.5 million to complete. Today, the recreation center is one of the Town of Christiansburg’s most-utilized facilities. During fiscal year 2016-2017, there were 108,659 membership scans into the center.
