Richard Lewis Johnson, 92, of Blacksburg, passed away peacefully, Thursday, Nov. 9, 2017 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family and friends. He was born in Blacksburg, VA on June 11, 1925 to the late William and Sadie Bland Johnson.
He was also preceded in death by his brothers and sisters-in-law, Fred O. and Lou Johnson, Bill and Barbara Johnson; sisters and brothers-in-law, Helen and Carl Mills, Barbara and Joseph Sumpter.
Richard worked at Virginia Tech in various departments from the time he was 16 until well into his 80s. His duties included working on the diary farm, in food science, and as a supervisor of the event staff for the athletic department for over 50 years. Richard loved the Lord with all his heart, he would pray every night asking for blessing from the Lord for all his family and friends by name.
Richard would do anything to help anyone and was never a stranger to those he met. Richard was a family man, who loved and protected his family fiercely and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Virginia Ruth Woolwine Johnson (Priss); his son, Richard Michael Johnson; grandson, Cameron Johnson, Kim, and great-grandson, Jaxen; grandson, Charlie Estes, Heather; grandsons by choice, Andre Crockett, John, James, and Jason Pritchard; many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Nov. 14, 2017 at 2 p.m. in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. T. Michael Bond officiating. Burial followed in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Christiansburg. The family received friends from 12:00-2:00 p.m. Tuesday prior to the service at McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg.
