Fleenor D3football.com All-South
The Emory & Henry College Football Team has seen one of its players selected to the 2017 D3football.com All-South Region Third Team, D3football.com officials announced Tuesday. Junior defensive tackle Josh Fleenor (Christiansburg) adds all-region honors to his All-ODAC First Team selection from last month.
It is the third year in a row that Emory & Henry has been represented on the D3football.com All-South Region Team with five selections over that three-year period.
Fleenor earns his first all-region accolades after a breakout year on the Wasps’ defensive line. The junior led the squad with 13.5 tackles for loss, returned an interception 90 yards for a touchdown and broke up five other passes on the year. He was also third on the team in overall tackles with 57. Fleenor posted at least one tackle for loss in each game with his best contest coming against Hampden-Sydney College. Against the Tigers, Fleenor had a season-high eight tackles, two in the backfield, and notched his 90-yard interception for a touchdown.
Meets affect CAC
The Christiansburg Aquatic Center will welcome the Swim and Tri Winter Invite to the facility this weekend, Dec. 7-10. This is a USA Swimming/Virginia Swimming age group invite meet will affect public access to the facility.
The competition pool will remain closed until 7:15 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 11. The leisure and therapy pools will close at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 7, and will remain closed until 5:30 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 11.
The entire facility will be closed through Sunday, Dec. 10.
ACC wrestler of week
Virginia Tech redshirt sophomore David McFadden has been named the ACC Wrestler of the Week after defeating three ranked opponents en route to capturing the 165-pound title at the prestigious Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas, Nevada, last week.
In all, McFadden, defeated five opponents, including 18th-ranked Jon Jay Chavez of Cornell in the quarterfinals, seventh-ranked Te’Shan Campbell of Ohio State in the semifinals and 17th-ranked Evan Wick of Wisconsin in the finals.
His fall over Wick marked the first pin in the finals at the Cliff Keen since 2013. He becomes only the third Virginia Tech wrestler to capture an individual title at the tournament. He led Tech to a sixth-place finish, the highest of any ACC school.
Hokie named award finalist
Senior LB Andrew Motuapuaka has been named one of five finalists for the 2017 Polynesian College Football Player of the Year Award, the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame announced Tuesday. The honor is presented annually to the most outstanding Polynesian college football player that epitomizes great ability and integrity.
Motuapuaka was named third-team All-ACC after finishing the regular season ranked second on Tech’s defense and tied for 13th in the ACC with 85 total tackles. The Virginia Beach native trails only CB Greg Stroman for the team lead in passes defended with seven and has racked up 10.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, six quarterback hurries, an interception, one fumble recovery and one forced fumble.
White Big South player of week
For the third time in her career, senior Janayla White has been named the Big South Player of the Week the league announced Monday afternoon as the forward averaged a double-double in two games on the week.
The honor was the sixth of her career, earning three freshman of the week nods during the 2014-15 season. In the two games, White averaged 14.0 points per game, 13.0 rebounds per game and 2.5 blocks per game. Leading Radford to a 1-1 record, White tallied 28 points and 26 rebounds.
