Virginia Tech women’s basketball team used a balanced offensive attack and capitalized on its chances at the free-throw line to pull away from the Boston College Eagles Sunday afternoon inside Cassell Coliseum.
The result moves the Hokies’ record to 12-3 (1-1), while the Eagles fell to 5-9 (0-1).
After a tight first quarter where the Hokies held a 3-point lead, the Hokies used a 13-0 run in the second frame to take control – and never looked back. Chanette Hicks, Rachel Camp and Aisha Sheppard all scored field goals during the run.
Tech rebounded from its loss Thursday against NC State in impressive fashion, shooting 50 percent from the field and converting the most free-throws (21) since the Maryland Eastern Shore game over a month ago. The Hokies went 21 of 24 from the charity stripe, their best percentage (.875) of the season.
The free-throw line has been an asset to Tech as they are second in the conference in made free throws this season, with 223.
Taylor Emery scored a game-high 22 points, on 7 of 8 shooting from the field which included two triples. She also had made all six of her free-throw attempts, as she went above the 20-point threshold for the seventh time.
Regan Magarity recorded her ninth double-double of the season as she scored 14 points and pulled down 11 rebounds on the afternoon.
Starting in her fifth consecutive game, Michelle Berry had a career day, scoring 15 points of 7 of 11 shooting. The redshirt sophomore also recorded five rebounds and an emphatic block in the game.
Hicks added 14 points and dished out seven assists, which took her career tally to 413, the second most in Virginia Tech history.
Sheppard poured it on late, recording 11 points.
The Hokies enjoyed a plus-14 margin on the glass, while also taking care of the ball, only committing 11 turnovers, and forcing the Eagles into 20.
• Kendyl Brooks’ made 3-pointer in the final minute was the 100th of her career. She is just the eighth player in program history to accomplish the feat.
• The 31-point margin game was the Hokies’ largest since defeating Clemson by 30 on Jan. 18, 2016.
• The Hokies went above 80 points for the eighth time this season.
Tech takes on the nationally ranked Louisville Cardinals on Sunday, Jan. 7 at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Kentucky. Tip is set for 2 p.m. and the game can be seen on ACC Network Extra.
The Hokies are back on Carilion Clinic Court on Thursday, Jan. 11 when they play host to ACC foe Pitt. Tip is set for 7 p.m.
