Quevedo named Big South Player of the Week
After putting together two strong performances a week ago in the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic, redshirt junior Claudia Quevedo has been named the Big South’s Player of the Week, the league announced Thursday.
The honor is the first of Quevedo’s career as the second by a Highlander this season as Janayla White donned the honor on Dec. 4.
In wins over Abilene Christian and Towson, Quevedo was lights out from the field, finishing the classic 10
for 14 from the field, including a blazing seven of eight from downtown. Tallying 15 points in each game, Quevedo has now scored 15 points in three of the last four games.
In addition to averaging 2.0 steals per game and 2.0 assists per game in the recent tournament, Quevedo was named to the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic All-Tournament Team. Quevedo has improved her season average 7.3 points per game and leads the team with 2.6 apg.
Jones named freshman of Week
After leading the Radford men’s basketball team to the 2017 Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic title, redshirt freshman guard Carlik Jones has been named Big South Freshman of the Week for the third time this season, the conference office announced Thursday.
With the award, Jones becomes the sixth player in program history to be named Big South Freshman of the Week three or more times, joining Blake Smith (2009-10), Amir Johnson (2006-07), Whit Holcomb-Faye (2002-03), Raymond Arrington (1999-00), Andrey Savtchenko (1998-99) and Anthony Walker (1993-94). Just 21 different Highlanders have ever earned the distinction and only nine have earned it multiple times.
The Cincinnati, Ohio native was undoubtedly the Highlanders’ most consistent player on their west coast swing, averaging 14.3 points on 46.7-percent shooting and 6.7 rebounds per game while adding five assists, four steals and a block across three games last week. He was clutch from the free throw line as well, going 13-for-15 (86.7%).
