The Lifelong Learning Institute at Virginia Tech is hosting a talk by author Beth Macy from 3-4:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2 at Warm Hearth Village Center.
Beth Macy is a New York Times-bestselling author of two books, “Factory Manand” and “Truevine.” Macy’s work as a newspaper reporter, mostly at The Roanoke Times, featured outsiders and underdogs and won more than a dozen awards.
Her books reflect a deep respect for the stories of marginalized people and communities, dogged persistence in her research, and a gift for telling complicated stories in a compelling way.
Her forthcoming book, Dopesick, is a look at the opioid epidemic as it unfolded in three Virginia communities; it will be published in August. Read more about her at the aptly named website: www.intrepidpapergirl.com.
In her presentation, “Get Out of Your Zip Code,” Macy will talk about the importance of storytelling (as well as readers and librarians) in building community across racial and socioeconomic lines.
An engaging speaker who “follows what moves her,” Macy shares both her heart and work with audiences.
Copies of her books will be for sale (cash or checks only) and the author will be available for signing. Come early for coffee and cookies and to purchase a book for signing after the talk.
The event is free and open to the public. Advance registration is not required. The Warm Hearth Village Center is located 2837 Warm Hearth Village Drive in Blacksburg.
