The Christiansburg High School baseball program is asking for old, but still in good condition shoes. In cooperation with Funds2Orgs, players, parents and coaches will earn funds based on the total weight of the pairs that are collected.
Baseball Coach Dale Nelson is excited about this unique shoe drive.
“We know that most people have extra shoes in their closets they would like to donate to us. By doing so, we raise money for our school’s baseball program and we have a chance to help families in developing nations who need economic opportunities. It’s a win-win for everyone,” he said.
All donated shoes will be “redistributed” through the Funds2Orgs network of microenterprise small business partners. In turn the organization helps individuals in developing countries to create, maintain and grow a small business.
Proceeds from the sales of shoes, according to Funds2Orgs, are used to feed, cloth and house needy families in Haiti. One entrepreneur in Haiti even earned enough money in the past few years to send her son to law school.
“We will collect used and worn shoes of all types, young kids and even cleats,” Nelson said.
Collection boxes will be placed at all of the county schools in Christiansburg. Additional ones are being planned for the Christiansburg rec and aquatics centers. Nelson said the only shoe that will not be accepted is snow boots.
