The Virginia Tech swim team had a solid second day of competition at the Technotational, turning in four NCAA B times and setting a program and pool record in the women’s 200-medley relay at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center.
During a time trial on Saturday, the 200-medley relay team of Klaudia Nazieblo, Joelle Vereb, Maggie Gruber and Adriana Grabski had a time of 1:37.96 to set a new pool and program mark. The previous records were set last season (1:38.45-pool / 1:38.02-program).
For the women’s team, Heather Sigmon claimed first and an NCAA B time of 54.99 in the 100-yard backstroke.
On the men’s side, Lasse Pittioni had a NCAA B time during the qualifying rounds of the 100-yard breaststroke, tallying a 55.25 performance, but he improved upon the mark in the finals with a top finish of 54.81. Norbert Szabo turned in an NCAA B time of 1:36.16 in the 200-yard freestyle.
The Hokies opened the evening finals with a win in the women’s 200-medley relay behind swims from Sigmon, Caroline de Jager, Kayla Purcell and Abigail Andrusin with a time of 1:42.02.
Jessica Beattie took second in the 400 IM with a time of 4:24.50. Virginia Tech followed with a sweep in the women’s 100 fly with Purcell and Danielle Griggs tying for the fastest time with a 55.39 mark. Molly Sheffield finished third in 55.65.
The Hokies went one, two in the 200 free behind Andrusin’s 1:49.91 and Sydney Pesetti’s 1:50.12.
Virginia Tech took the top spot in the men’s 200-medley relay as Alex McMurry, Lasse Pittioni, Collin Fiala and Chris Outlaw turned in a time of 1:30.07.
Connor Doyle finished third with a time of 3:59.08 in the 400 IM. Samuel Tornqvist got the Hokies back in the top spot, finishing in 48.41 in the 100 fly.
Following behind Szabo’s top performance in the 200 free, Hassler Carroll took second with 1:39.76 while Colin Murphy finished in 1:41.12 for third to complete the sweep.
The Hokies wrapped up the swim events with a one, three finish in the 100-yard backstroke as McMurry swam 49.28 while Cooper Pitts tallied 49.69.
