The girls’ soccer program at Blacksburg High School continues to produce outstanding teams and players.
Wednesday, Senior Ashlen Burch signed a letter of intent to continue her playing career at Milligan College, located in Elizabethton, Tennessee where she has been awarded a combined athletic and academic scholarship.
According to Burch, she chose Milligan for a variety of reasons.
“They have an extremely talented soccer team and they play in a very competitive league. The coaches are top notch and great leaders as well as great mentors. When I was first introduced to the soccer team, I was amazed at how nice and welcoming every player was. I am very excited to get to play with them next year.”
Another reason, Burch said, was the overall atmosphere on campus.
“Everyone is super friendly and helpful, and I felt at home. I look forward to attending Milligan, because it is known for its outstanding academics and has a very prestigious nursing program.”
She will also have a familiar face already on campus. Her brother already plays soccer for Milligan.
Entering her final high school season, Burch has already contributed to three regular season and tournament championships, two region championships, three appearances in the state final four and two state championships in 2015 and 2016. During Ashlen’s tenure with the BHS Girls Soccer Program, the team has achieved a record of 61-3-3.
She expects the team to again be strong this spring.
“We only lost two players last year, so most of the team is returning. I expect us to be very competitive and have a great season.”
In her freshman and sophomore years, Burch recorded eight goals and 15 assists and earned second-team all-region accolades.
In her junior season, Burch was second in points on the team scoring eight goals and three assists. She also was a part of three game winning goals during the 2017 season
Looking back, Burch said she has definitely played with some very skilled players throughout her career and they have taught her many things including the importance of hard work, teamwork, and determination.
“I have also been blessed to play for some great coaches who have made this sport fun through their great leadership. They taught us winning is great but caring for each other and working together is the most important. Big wins grow from this,” she said.
Ashlen’s club career includes a long tenure with the NRU Soccer Club. As a student at Blacksburg High School Ashlen is a member of HOSA, Student Assembly and National Honor Society where she tutors students in need.
