Sidney Monroe Altizer, 91, passed away peacefully at his home in Bristow, Virginia, on Feb. 3, 2018, surrounded by his devoted and loving family.
He was predeceased in death by his wife, Doris Simmons Altizer, of 54 years. Sidney is survived by his two children, Jay Altizer and his wife, Shirley, of Christiansburg, Virginia, and Wendy Altizer Schulz and her husband, Kenneth, of Bristow, Virginia; five grandchildren, Jay Sidney Altizer, Cindy Schulz, Kenny Schulz, Brandy Stump, and Sherry Shepherd; six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Sidney was born and raised in Riner, Virginia, where he graduated salutatorian from Auburn High School. During WWII, he enlisted in the United States Navy serving honorably for two years aboard the USS Clay. After his service, he worked 38 years for the Radford Army Ammunition Plant during which time he married the love of his live, Doris Simmons. Sidney was a faithful member of the Christiansburg Church of the Brethren for over 50 years. With his gentle and humble spirit, his walk of faith has now led him home.
The family received friends on Friday, February 9, 2018, at Horne Funeral Home, 1300 North Franklin Street, Christiansburg.
A celebration of his life was held at Christiansburg Church of the Brethren, 310 South Franklin Street, Christiansburg, on Saturday, February 10, 2018, at 2:00 pm, with Pastor Jerry Hylton officiating. Intermenty followed the service at Sunset Cemetery.
