White player of week
The three-week stretch of torrid performances by Janayla White continues as the senior has been named Big South Player of the Week for the second straight week, marking the sixth time on the season the weekly award has resided in the New River Valley.
As announced by the league on Monday afternoon, White has donned the weekly award five times in her career, while becoming the first player to win the award three times during the 2017-18 season. White has won eight Big South weekly awards, earning three freshman of the week nods during the 2014-15.
In two dominating Big South victories, White averaged 20.5 points per game, 10.0 rebounds per game, 3.5 blocks per game and 1.5 assists per game. White was 19 for 21 from the field, turning in a 90.5 shooting clip as the Highlanders improved to 20-7 overall and 13-3 in league play.
Emery on ACC team
Tech guard Taylor Emery was named to the ACC’s Second Team as announced by the league’s office Tuesday afternoon. Emery has averaged 17.6 points in her first season in Blacksburg, scoring 20 or more in 14 different contests.
She was named the ACC’s Player of the Week on Feb. 12 after a week where she averaged 28.5 points helping the Hokies defeat North Carolina 90-74 in Chapel Hill. Emery scored 25 points and dished out six assists, her best mark of the season. Against rival Virginia, Emery scored 32 points, setting the new Virginia Tech record on Carilion Clinic Court at Cassell Coliseum in ACC games. She went 13 of 20 from the field, knocking down three 3-pointers.
In the Hokies’ win over Clemson, she recorded her first career double-double with 16 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.
ACC tournament tickets
Ticket booklets for the 2018 ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament are now available through the Virginia Tech Athletics Ticket Office. The tournament will take place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on March 6-10.
After going on sale to Hokie Club members and men’s basketball season ticket holders, a limited number of ACC Tournament booklets in Virginia Tech’s allotment remain for sale to the public. Tournament booklets include admission to all games played in the tournament.
Booklets are available at $398, and tickets are located in the upper level of the arena. To purchase, visit HokieTickets.com.
Tickets will be shipped via UPS and not mailed, and they should be ordered prior to Thursday at noon. Any tickets ordered after noon on Thursday will need to be picked up at will call at the Barclays Center starting on Tuesday at 10 a.m. during the week of the game in New York.
Bolen top seed in tourney
Virginia Tech will have the top seeded wrestlers from 165 pounds to 197 pounds at Saturday’s ACC Wrestling Championship in Chapel Hill, N.C., where the Hokies will look to defend their conference title.
Redshirt sophomore David McFadden (165), freshman Hunter Bolen (Christiansburg) (174), redshirt junior Zack Zavatsky (184) and redshirt senior Jared Haught (197) were the unanimous number one seeds at their weight classes, as selected by the league’s coaches. Tech’s four No. 1 seeds are the most in this year’s field.
Along with redshirt sophomore Brent Moore, the number two seed at 141, and redshirt senior Dennis Gustafson, seeded second at 133, the six Hokies will automatically receive byes to the semifinals.
Redshirt junior Solomon Chishko is seeded sixth at 157, where the top three placers will punch their ticket to nationals, and redshirt freshman Andrew Dunn is seeded fifth at heavyweight, one of the deepest conference weight classes in the country. The top five 285-pounders will qualify for NCAAs.
The top five wrestlers at 133 will also receive automatic berths.
