A student-athlete from Eastern Montgomery High School has announced his intentions to continue his playing career at Bluefield College. Senior football player Trevor Brown signed a letter of intent Wednesday in front of family, coaches and friends in the Eastern Montgomery library.
Brown rushed for 276 yards this past season for the Mustangs and on defense recorded 50 tackles including 35 solos. He also had six tackles for loss with one interception. As a junior, he tallied 71.5 tackles including 54 solos.
His high school coach, Jordan Stewart, said his team was losing a four-year starter who was the top player on both offense and defense.
“Off the field, he was an excellent student and was a leader by example,” Stewart said.
This past season, Brown received the team’s top lifter award in the weight room.
Bluefield, who plays in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) and is a NAIA program, was 6-5 last season, the best record since the program was jumpstarted n 2012.
Bluefield Coach Dewey Lusk is a native of Christiansburg and in his second year at the helm of the Ram program after serving as the offensive coordinator of Webber International University for the 2016 season.
From 2011-15 Lusk was head coach at UVa-Wise where he helped guide the Highland Cavaliers in the transition from an NAIA program to an NCAA Division II school and served as the Emory & Henry offensive coordinator from 1991-2005.
This Southwest Virginia experience has led him to recruit the New River Valley. In addition to Brown, he has signed players from Christiansburg and Narrows high schools.
“That is my goal to recruit the best players in southwest Virginia, and in Trevor, we’re getting an excellent player. He is everything you’re looking for in a football player, and we’re very excited to get him up to Bluefield,” Lusk said.
Academically, Brown is in the top 10 of the senior class and plans to major in nursing in college. He admitted he chose the school because its proximity to his home and the opportunity to prepare for his long- term future off the field.
Bluefield will open the 2018 season on Aug. 25 at Mitchell Stadium against Cumberland (Tenn.) University.
