Another member of the Auburn High School softball team has announced plans to continue her playing career in college. Lacey Bishop will attend Ferrum College in the fall and join the school’s softball team.
“I chose Ferrum because I never saw myself going to a big school like Radford or Virginia Tech. I have always been a small town girl and think that Ferrum was the best place for me,” she said.
Bishop visited the college in September and fell in love with the campus. The senior has played second base, shortstop and outfield over her time at Auburn. Last season, she hit .406 with 22 runs scored, 17 RBIs, seven doubles and a triple.
Her high school coach, David Hurd, said Lacey has worked as hard as any softball player he has ever coached.
“As a freshman, she had the necessary skills to be a very good player but wasn’t strong enough physically to be a top tier player. I told her clearly that she needed to add strength to reach her goals. She dedicated herself to the weight room and now bench-presses 165 pounds. This determination has put her on the path that she is on,” he said.
Bishop plans on majoring in psychology and minoring in criminology.
Off the diamond, Bishop enjoys weightlifting and hanging out with friends and family. She also helps her grandmother with a dog breeding business.
This season, her final in an Auburn uniform, she has the ultimate goal of a state championship ring.
“Auburn has come very close these last few seasons, and I think that we have a really great chance to win it all this year. It would be an honor to get the first state championship in softball for Auburn High School,” Bishop said.
Last year, Ferrum (23-17) dropped a heartbreaking 8-7 game to Averett University in the title game of the 2017 USA South Softball Tournament. So far this season, the Panthers are picked to finish third in the conference’s East Division. They are 18-10 overall and will lose three seniors this spring.
Bishop’s former teammate at Auburn, Olivia Boyd, is currently a freshman utility player on the Ferrum squad.
