Two student-athletes from Blacksburg High School have announced plans to continue their careers in college. Morgan McCoy will play softball and volleyball at Ferrum College, while Noah Ramsey will run track at Virginia Tech.
McCoy said choosing the Rocky Mount school was very easy because it just felt like home during an official visit.
“Playing national softball the last two years, I had traveled all over the nation, looking at colleges in California and Colorado and nothing felt more right than Ferrum,” she said.
McCoy has played both volleyball and softball during her time at Blacksburg High School, so it just seemed second-nature to do both in college. It was during a visit to Ferrum this past fall that decision became a little easier after talking with a future teammate who also does both.
In addition to travel softball, she began playing travel volleyball in the sixth grade and has continued through high school.
Last season as a BHS junior, her batting averaged hung around the .300 mark, and she has been the team’s starting third baseman for the past two seasons.
This past December, she was fortunate to make the New River Valley 18’s volleyball team out of Roanoke.
“I played with them this season, and in February was offered a spot on Ferrum’s volleyball team for this fall. I’m am very excited to have an opportunity to play both sports I love, while getting a quality education at Ferrum College,” she said.
McCoy plans to major in Business Administration and Minor in Psychology. She is interested in being a real estate agent when her playing career is over.
Ramsey said he chose Virginia Tech because they have such a successful track program where he feels he can reach his full potential.
He started running track in the seventh grade and during the recent indoor high school season he bested his 100-meter time from 11.14 to 11.06. He also recorded a best of 6.5 in the 55 meters. He was also on a state indoor champion in the 4x200m relay and 4x100m relay with current BHS and future Tech teammate, Cole Beck.
At Tech, Ramsey hopes to run the 60m and 4x200m relay during the indoor season and the 100m, 4x100m relay, and the 200m during the outdoor season.
One of his goals on the track would be to qualify and place at the NCAA Indoor Championship meet. “One of my goals off the track is to inspire the younger generation of football players/ track runners and show them that hard work pays off,” he said.
Ramsey hopes to major in business at Virginia Tech.
