Hokies headed to Hawaii
The Virginia Tech Hokies will compete in the 2019 Maui Jim Maui Invitational. The tournament announced its 2019 field today, a collection of programs that boasts a combined 198 NCAA Tournament appearances, 44 Final Four berths and an incredible 16 national championships.
BYU, Dayton, Georgia, Kansas, Michigan State, UCLA and host Chaminade will join the Hokies for the 36th annual tournament, which will be contested November 25-27 at the historic Lahaina Civic Center on the island of Maui.
The Hokies announced in November that they will compete in the 2018 Gildan Charleston Classic in November, 2018. Joining Tech in that event will be Alabama, Appalachian State, Ball State, Davidson, Northeastern, Purdue and Wichita State.
Senior Olympic registration
Registration is now underway for the 40th anniversary of the New River Valley Senior Games. Activities take place April 29-May 4 at locations around the area and are for individuals 50 and over. Price is $10 for one event, $15 for two and $20 for participating in three or more events. All registered individuals will receive a t-shirt. Awards will be presented to Gold, Silver and Bronze levels. There must be a minimum of six participants for each event. For more information or to register call Tammy Caldwell at 382-6975.
Claytor fishing series
Claytor Lake will be the site of a summer catfish fishing series. An entry fee of $50 is required at the start of the series at Dehaven Park. The allowed fishing zone is from the Allisonia Boat Launch to Claytor Lake Dam. Tournament hours are 7 p.m. to 4 a.m., April 28, May 12 & 26, June 9 & 23, July 7 & 21, August 4 & 18, and September 1, 15 & 29. Fish must be alive for weigh-in.

Concord football schedule
The Concord University football team in conjunction with the Mountain East Conference office has announced its 2018 schedule.
The schedule features 10 conference games (five home, five away) and a non-conference contest against UNC-Pembroke in the middle of October.
All kickoff times are still to be announced with the exception of Concord’s home opener Saturday, Sept. 6 against Charleston, which will be at 7:00 p.m. on a Thursday night from Callaghan Stadium.
The Mountain Lions open up the season at West Virginia Wesleyan September 1 before the home date with UC. In week three of the season, CU travels to UVA Wise.
Concord returns home to face Notre Dame September 22 before closing the final month of the season at Shepherd September 29.
Homecoming will be October 6 against Glenville State. After its annual Homecoming game, the Maroon and Gray take to the road for consecutive away games at West Virginia State October 13 and at UNC-Pembroke October 20.
