Alice Faye (Mathena) LoMascolo, of Christiansburg, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Easter Sunday, April 1, 2018, surrounded by a circle of women who loved her dearly. She was 71.
Alice was the only child of Robert and Ruby (Southern) Mathena, born on September 13, 1946 in Christiansburg, VA. She grew up and lived her life in the New River Valley, graduating from Christiansburg High School in 1964 and later earning her Bachelors and Masters degrees in English Literature from Virginia Tech.
She had two daughters, Angelina (Flynn) and Anna, and three grandchildren, Joshua Flynn and William and Maggie Thomas.
Alice proudly lived a simple life on her own terms, and valued above all else her large and extended family, her close friends, her dogs, her students, and her love of Victorian-era literature and English composition.
A celebration of Alice’s life will be held on Saturday, April 14th, at 3 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 1301 Gladewood Dr, Blacksburg, VA.
A reception will immediately follow in Elarth Hall.
In lieu of flowers, Alice requested donations be made to either the Wolf Education and Research Center (http://www.wolfcenter.org/give/) or the American Civil Liberties Union (www.aclu.org).
