Two athletes from Blacksburg High School have signed letters of intent to continue their careers at the next level.
Earlier today, Laura Hodge and Hunter Radford announced plans to attend George Mason and Winston-Salem State respectively.
Hodge has lettered all four years at BHS and has committed to swim at NCAA Division I George Mason University.
This past season, she was the co-captain of the girls’ swim team. Laura currently holds six school records in swimming, including the 200 IM, 200 Free, 500 Free, 100 Fly and the 200 and 400 free relays.
Hodge’s performance helped lead the Bruins to a third place finish in the first year as a 4A-classificaton school.
At the state championships this winter, Hodge finished second in the 200 free and fifth in the 500 Free. She has qualified for the Junior Nationals for the past three years and has also set 12 team records for H20kie Aquatics.
In addition to swimming, Hodge holds a 4.12 GPA, and is a member of National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society. At George Mason, she plans to major in Bioengineering in the Honor’s Program.
Radford is a four-year letterman, captain and senior catcher/first baseman for the Bruins and was named the 2014 Offensive Player of the Year and 2015 Defensive Player of the Year.
He was a member of the 2016 Conference 32 runner-up Bruin squad that competed in the 3A West Region tournament.
As a junior, Radford batted .357 with five doubles, one triple, two home runs and 14 RBIs and was the team’s 2017 Offensive Player of the Year.
A 2018 Rawlings-Perfect Game Preseason Atlantic Region Honorable Mention selection, Radford is a four-year member of the Kansas City Royals North Carolina Scout Team and earned a position on USA Baseball’s 2015 and 2016 Capital Region Teams.
In addition to baseball, he is a chapter officer in the National Technical Honor Society and serves as the National Region 2 Vice President of SkillsUSA.
Radford has received both athletic and academic scholarships and will sign a letter-of-intent to play baseball at NCAA Division II Winston Salem State University, where he plans to pursue a major in Motorsports Management.
