The New River Valley Master Gardeners are hosting their spring Rain Barrel Workshop from 6-7 p.m. Wednesday, April 18 on the lawn of the Montgomery County Government Center (755 Roanoke St. Christiansburg).
Stan Stanley, who’s been a NRV Master Gardener for a decade, has nine rain barrels and a flourishing garden, leads the workshop providing information about the role of rain barrels in water conservation and water-quality protection.
“We’re trying to educate people about conserving water,” Stanley said. “We talk about water barrels, then we put them together.”
The barrels are 50-gallon big bellied, plastic drums – Pickle drums from the Mt. Olive company in North Carolina – with screw-off tops making them easy to work with and modify into a sturdy, mosquito-proof, garden-watering, house-ornamenting barrel.
Sixty-five dollars gets you your own pickle barrel, instruction from Stan and neighboring barrel-makers, and all supplies.
To pay and signup, call Stan Stanley at 980-4137 or 250-4861.
