The Blue Ridge Junior Golf Tour is entering its 20th season, and registration is now underway for this season that will include a few extra commemorative gifts.
What began as an idea of Golf Professional Vic Sorrell and a few mothers of young golfers at Fincastle Country Club has blossomed into an excellent junior golf tour featuring competitive play at some fantastic courses.
Approximately 2,000 junior golfers have participated overthe years and have gained the fine qualities that the game of golf offers.
This season’s schedule includes three Golf Academies, one “Golf by the Rules” clinic, and seven tournaments including the season ending two-day Tour Championship.
Sorrell conducts all of the Academies, teaching “4 Basics” and “4 Fundamentals.” “4 Basics” include grip, posture, aim, and body position to play the shot. “4 Fundamentals” include ground contact, clubface contact, squaring to clubface, and clubface to club path relationship. At the “Golf by the Rules” clinic participants are exposed to specific rules of the game as well as etiquette practices. They also play nine holes and listen to a rule interpretation on each hole.
Tournament sites this season include: The Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech (Radford), The Glade Springs Resort (Daniels, WV), Fincastle on the Mountain (Bluefield, VA), Wytheville Golf Club (Wytheville), Glenrochie Country Club (Abingdon), Pipestem Resort State Park (Pipestem, WV) and Auburn Hills Golf Club (Riner).
The application fee is $25 and includes a BRJGT cap, bag tag, ball mark repair tool, and a current USGA Rule Book. Anyone interested in being a part of the tour can find an application form at area golf courses or on the website www.brjgt.com. Questions can be answered by calling (276) 326-2089 or the BRJGT cell at (276) 345-8786.
The tour is open to boys and girls up to age 18. Events begin in June.
