The horseshoe bend on the New River as seen from Lover’s Leap circa 1900. The Virginian Railroad was later constructed on the left side of the river and the Radford Army Ammunition Plant on the right side. Lover’s Leap is a sheer precipice of about 200 feet and is named for a legend about a Native American couple jumping to their deaths after being denied the right to marry. (This photo is from the D. D. Lester Collection. This image and many more are available from the Montgomery Museum & Lewis Miller Regional Art Center.)
