Blacksburg High School has announced its 2018-2019 Sports Hall of Fame class, which will be formally recognized at the homecoming football game on Friday, October 19.
The inductees include: Duane Shealor, David R. Wright, Debbie Byrd Campbell and Jim Shockley.
Shealor (Class of 1966) was a three-sport letterman earning nine letters in football, basketball and baseball, and was the co-captain of both the football and basketball teams his senior year.
He started at quarterback his sophomore, junior and senior years and was part of the 1963 and 1964 New River District championship teams. He set a school record his senior year with a 98-yard touchdown run from the line of scrimmage.
Shealor also lettered two years in basketball and played on the 1965 Group 1B state basketball championship team. In addition, he played four years of varsity baseball.
Off the field, he as a student council representative, class vice-president, president of the Monogram Club his senior year and was chosen to attend Boys State in Virginia. In addition, he the 1966 H .B. Dillon Sportsmanship Award by the Lions Club, and was recognized by the Blacksburg Sports Club as the “Most Outstanding Athlete” for the Year 1966.
From there, he earned a full scholarship to play football at Virginia Tech. After graduation from Tech, he taught in the Montgomery County school system and serviced in the U.S. Army Reserves.
Shealor entered private business in 1977 and has been a lifetime resident of Montgomery County and a member and an Elder at Blacksburg Christian Church. He and his wife, Bonnie, have two children and six wonderful grandchildren who live in the area.
Wright (BHS Class of 1968) was a 4-sport letterman, earning 10 letters in Wrestling, Basketball, Cross Country and Track. As a freshman, he was the top wrestler in his weight class in the district. (Wrestling was cancelled after that year.)
Wright lettered in basketball during his junior and senior years and was a member the 1968 State Championship team, and as a senior, he was undefeated in cross country and led the team to an undefeated season.
He was the leading point scorer on the track team in his junior and senior year, running the 100, 220, 440 and mile relay. He also set the school record in the 220-yard dash as a senior with what was also the fastest time in Timesland at that time.
Off the track, Wright was a member of the National Honor Society and the recipient of the Senior Citizenship Award.
After graduation, he attended Virginia Tech where he was on the cross-country team, the swim team, and the indoor and outdoor track teams. During his senior year, Wright was a member of the record setting indoor track mile relay team.
He would later start the cross country and indoor track programs at Dublin High School. In his second year, which was the last year of the school, his track team won the boy’s district championship.
Wright taught 44 years in Pulaski County, where he coached cross country, indoor and outdoor track for a total of 43 seasons.
He was the first coach of cross country and track at Pulaski County High School. At PCHS, his cross-country team won the school’s first men’s district championship and went on to win three additional district championships. Wright and his wife, Sylvia, are retired, and live in Blacksburg.
Byrd Campbell (BHS Class of 1982) excelled in three sports for Blacksburg High in the early 80s/
In volleyball, Campbell was a four-year varsity letterman on championship teams that were undefeated in district play all four years, winning one regional championship and compiling a record of 55-4. Campbell was recognized as a team captain and a two-time all-region performer.
In basketball, Campbell was a three-year varsity letterman on championship teams that were undefeated in district play all three years, winning one regional championship, and compiling a record of 66-4. She was recognized as a team captain and second team all-region performer.
In tennis, she was a three-year varsity starter and letterman. In district play, she was undefeated in singles and doubles in 1981 and 1982. During her senior season, the team won regionals and placed third in the state for doubles.
Campbell then earned a volleyball scholarship to Radford University where she was a four-year starter and played one year of tennis for the Highlanders.
Before starting her Stage 2 Smile Home Staging business in 2014, she served as a guidance counselor in Montgomery County Public Schools for 19 years. Campbell is married to her high school classmate, Allen, and live in Blacksburg.
Shockley (BHS Class of 1995) was a three-sport letterman earning nine letters in football, basketball and baseball and was named Blacksburg Sports Club “Male Athlete of the Year” in 1995
As a 3-year starting quarterback, Shockley helped lead BHS to three straight New River District Championships and Region Championship and State Semi Finalists his junior and senior season
He was named First Team All-New River District quarterback three straight years and “offensive player of the year as a senior, all-region as a junior and senior, and honorable mention all-state honors his senior year
Shockley passed for nearly 5,000 yards in his three-year high school career and established a new school record at the time, while setting numerous other passing records.
In addition, he was a 3-year starter in Basketball and helped lead BHS to two regular season New River District Titles, three New River District tournament titles, one regional championship and one state tournament berth.
He was a 3-year starter in baseball and earned All-New River District honors as a junior and senior and all-region and all-state as a senior. He would continue his football career at Virginia Tech from 1995-2000 and saw playing time at quarterback, wide receiver and special teams.
While at Virginia Tech, the Hokies earned three Big East titles and five bowl appearances and was a member of the 1999 team that played Florida State for the National Championship
As a senior, Shockley won the John William Schneider Award to the player who excels in athletics, scholarship and Leadership
He served as a graduate assistant coach for four years at Virginia Tech, and his other coaching experience includes: 2004 – William and Mary assistant coach – A-10 champions and national semi-finalist; 2005 – 2014 – Virginia Military Institute assistant coach and served as the school’s recruiting and special teams coordinator; and 2015-2016 – Christopher Newport assistant coach.
After working as a college football coach for 16 years, he currently works as a Territory Sales Manager for Invictus Sales and Marketing and resides in Roanoke with Cheryl, his wife of 14 years.
