Linkous makes CVCL all-star team
Three Concord University baseball players have been selected to the Carolina-Virginia College League (CVCL) All-Star team, the league has announced.
Sophomore infielder Jakob Divers, sophomore outfielder Adam Linkous of Blacksburg and junior infielder Brett Simmons were tabbed to the team. All three are playing for the Roanoke Rails this summer.
For Linkous, it will be second straight season representing the Rails on the CVCL All-Star squad. Divers earned a spot on the all-star roster in his first season playing in the wood bat league while Simmons landed on the all-star team in his third season for the Rails.
The trio will be playing for the CVCL West squad. The CVCL All-Star is 6:30 p.m. July 7 at Victory Christian High School—home of the CVCL’s Charlotte Crushers.
Local golfers fare well at Glade
The Cobb course at Glade Springs Resort hosted the Blue Ridge Junior Golf Tour players June 30 with several taming the course with low scores.
16-18 Age Group Par 72 6629 yards
Patrick Smith of Beckley won the age group with a three under par 69. Wyoming East teammate Michael Growe, Jr. of Pineville, WV shot 75 and finished second. Cole Burgess of Bluefield, WV and Avery Alexander of Christiansburg tied for third with scores of 77.
14-15 Age Group Par 72 6134 yards
Daniel Goode of Wytheville fired an even par 72 to win the age group by 10 shots. Goode reaped the benefit of keeping the ball in play. Seth Walker of Christiansburg shot 82 to finish second. Slater Linkous of Christiansburg shot 83 and finished third.
12-13 Age Group Par 72 5431 yards
Kenzie Weddle of Floyd shot 91 to win age group. Carson Ballard of Christiansburg and Jonah Willson of Daniels, WV tied for second with scores of 93.
10-12 Age Group Par 36 2483 yards
Jake Albert of Christiansburg won the age group with a score of 38. Grant McCall of Richlands was second with a score of 42, and Jack Skinner of Blacksburg was third at 47.
Highlander on NBA summer roster
Former Radford University men’s basketball standout Javonte Green has earned an invitation to the MGM Resorts NBA Summer League with the Phoenix Suns, the organization announced.
A 2015 graduate of Radford, he becomes the first Highlander to participate in the NBA Summer League since Art Parakhouski played with the Boston Celtics and New York Knicks in the 2010 and 2012 summers respectively.
Green has spent the last three years overseas, playing for Marin Peixe Galego in Spain and most recently Pallacanestro Trieste 2004 in Italy. In the 2017-18 season, he averaged 18.1 points, 7.1 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 2.3 steals across 41 games to lead Trieste to the Italian Serie A2 title.
The Petersburg native racked up numerous awards in his incredible four-year career at Radford. He averaged 14.4 points, 8.0 rebounds, 1.8 steals and 1.1 assists per game en route to three All-Big South Conference selections, one Big South Defensive Player of the Year award, and one NABC All-District team honor.
Green owns school records for career rebounds (1,064), steals (243) and games played (133) while ranking second in program history for career points scored (1,911), field goals made (701), free throws made (485), and games started (122).
Robertson named state coach of year
Virginia Tech head women’s golf coach Carol Robertson has been named the Virginia State Coach of the Year, in voting by the Virginia Association of Sports Information Directors. Golfer Elizabeth Bose was named first team All-State, and Amanda Hollandsworth and Emily Mahar were named to the second team.
Robertson has overseen the development of the Virginia Tech program and led the team to its first-ever NCAA Regional appearance this season, in just its third season of existence. She has also built the program with a strong academic foundation.
The Virginia Tech women’s golf program received a 2018 Public Recognition Award from the NCAA and the golfers earned a perfect multi-year 1.000 APR, with multiple standouts in the classroom.
