Glenrochie Country Club in Abingdon hosted the Blue Ridge Junior Golf Tour July 9. Superb course conditions and a hospitable staff greeted the young players.
Dewayne Belcher, BRJGT Director of Tour Operations, said Glenrochie provided an excellent competition course with a fair challenge for each age group.
Here is a summary of the results:
16-18 Age Group Par 72 6342 yards
Tyler Higginbotham of Pembroke won the age group with a birdie on the first hole of a play-off. Higginbotham sank a 22 foot left to right breaking putt to defeat Trey Sparks of Tazewell and Tyler Williams of Floyd. Higginbotham had made birdies on 17 and 18 to post a score of 83 and earn the right to the play-off. Sparks finished second in the play-off.
14-15 Age Group Par 72 5520 yards
Caleigh Street of Jewel Ridge shot 75 to win the age group. Street played the front nine holes in even par to jump to an early lead and continued steadily on the second nine holes to win by 7 strokes over Tyler Galligher of Princeton, West Virginia. Benjamin White of Bluefield and Seth Walker of Christiansburg shot 85 to tie for third.
12-13 Age Group Par 72 5520 yards
Tyler Sayers of Marion shot 88 to win the age group. Carson Ballard of Christiansburg shot 97 to place second. Kenzie Weddle of Floyd was a stroke back in third place.
10-12 Age Group Par 35 2364 yards
Grant McCall of Richlands won the age group with a score of 38. McCall made four pars and a birdie in route to the win. David Goode of Wytheville shot 41 and finished second. Hunter Simmons of Abingdon played in his first BRJGT tournament and finished third with a score of 51.
9 and Under Age Group Par 35 1848 yards
Campbell Sayers of Marion shot 47 and won the age group. Blaine Morgan of Bluefield, West Virginia shot 60 to finish second. Blaine also was recognized with the Sportsmanship.
The Tour continues next July 16 at Pipestem Resort State Park.
